Hey!

I am here in NC and the hurricane rain has arrived. My bike has been outside for the day getting wet. Is applying Tri-flow to the chain enough care for the bike? what about the cables? does a lot of water hurt them?

thanx

Gabe

If it got totally soaked, it could have water inside the frame, so if the bike is steel, that's obviously a big problem

Steal Rusts doesn't it? Glad my bike is in the shed, although it's not raining now, it's a nice thought to know its save from that.

Turn the frame upsidedown to dump the water out, if you don't have drain holes bored in it. Oil anything that needs it...

I don't hold with this whole 'water soluble bike' mentality. They're not made of sugar and spice, if your bike can't take a few knocks it's not worth the effort of buying, IMHO.

OK to ride in the rain, but why leave your steed outside? Or in the shed like baby jesus? Welcome your loved ones inside, they will live longer, happier lives.

Bring it inside.

Yes it means bring your bike into your warm and dry home if possible. It will last longer. Should your bike be outside when you are not on it? NO.

Heh, I bring mine in too, when space permits. But it's not always possible...or efficient. Once again, they're not made out of sugar...indoors is best, it keeps vandals, pranksters, bugs, water, grit, grime, and any number of other problems at bay. But when you're allotted 6X12 feet of living area to fit your entire existence...IE dorm room...sharing that with a mini-fleet of bikes isn't always pleasant.

Don't forget to pull the stem and seatpost to regrease them. I just got caught in a small rainshower a couple of weeks ago. After pulling the stem I was surprised to see droplets of water inside. The headset has a gasket to prevent water and sweat from running down in there so it could have been condensation, but who knows. And it is a really good idea to keep your bike inside, whether you've got a Walmart special or top end bike. It will last a very long time and give a good return on investment.
