Hello left coasters!

My brother and I fly out Thursday to San Fran and plan on biking down to Santa Barbara on a self-supported tour.

I've read a few stories in the news where Highway 1 suffered quite a bit of damage due to the recent storms.

Our airfare is non-refundable so the trip is a go..

Can anyone tell me what we're in for in terms of riding conditions along hwy 1?

Are there any areas we absolutely must avoid?

Note - I didn't post this in the touring forum as I'm really only concerned with riding conditions/higway 1 conditions

Thank you
Mat

Thanks, DanH.

I was browsing that page just last night. It does provide a good bit of information. It appears that the planned route shouldn't be affected all that much.

What I was really looking for here was a cyclist perspective.

If the road is closed due to landslide, I'd consider riding through anyway. A few years ago, my friend George walked his bike over a landslide and he & his touring pal had all of Big Sur Hwy to himself. Just the thought of that makes me wish the Ebola virus would catch on on this continent...

And if it's just too ugly but you still need to get south, Highway 25 south out of Hollister is an interesting, uncrowded road, but access to water might be an issue.

The last time I rode down from San Francisco Route 1 from Big Sur to Cambria was closed to car traffic. It was heaven!!! OK yeah we had to hike the bike at times due to slides but no car traffic!

You might still encounter slides. Deal with them. But frankly your worse problem will be seniors driving motor homes on a narrow, winding, steep Route 1. Fear for your life...
