Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

i saw these two guys abusing some nice old 3 speeds.
Is it wrong of me to have to desire to steal them to protect them from their abusing partners?
I wont steal them, but I am i the only one who feels this way?

I hate when I see stupid people mistreating something they don't know the value of. Maybe you should offer to buy them though if you can't stand it?

What exactly were they doing? Was it verbal or physical abuse? Or was it the most common, and tragic yet socially accepted brand of abuse-
neglect?

+1. Just offer them some weed money and they'll give the bikes to you.

Define abuse in the context of this thread.
Post pics.
One person's "abuse" might an another' "use".
I suppose one could say I abused my LeMond Fillmore because I had a rear rack on it mounted with p-clips and rode it down a dirt trail once.
I suppose one could say I abused my Colnago ML because I have a B.O.B. trailer skewer on it and towed the trailer to the store with it.
Ps, I've got B.O.B. nuts on the Fillmore too, forgot about those for a moment. 8-)
Define "abuse" please.
And what kind of 3-speeds were the bikes? Something special or nothing special?
A thief is several factors lower than a Drew in my opinion, YMMV.
If the bikes are worth saving then go to your local big box store and buy two new bikes for under $200 for both and offer the 3-speeders an even swap for them. They'll think you're a fool for doing so, but if the bikes are worth saving (or worth the risk of stealing) then you'll ride away with the better deal in the swap.
But, still, post pics.

IDK, if it weren't for some kids abusing old beach cruisers, mountain biking wouldn't have been invented...

I've actually thought about hanging onto a couple of decent but low cost bikes in ready to ride condition just to have handy for horse trades in case I come across a situation or decent but run down bike. I'm going to have to set aside some space for this in the Spring.
Do what I do Offer them "nice looking" full suspention department store bike I offten trade these department store bikes for old bicycles, people willining trade sometimes I get three old for one new!

The standard of "abuse" on the C&V forum is basically equivalent to the general public's standard of "use."

Don't go to burningman- you'd be appalled at what bikes are put through- dust, fur, glitter, LED lights.
it's real bad.

3 speed to fixie conversions maybe?
I was working on my bike down at the local DIY bike shop today and I saw this guy hammering away at his bottom bracket's adjustable cup. Curious, I asked what he was trying to do, and he replied that his bike had seen some rain recently, and his bottom bracket started clicking so he wanted to service it, but the cup was seized. Always looking for a challenge, I started helping him out, and as I did I slowly realized what was I working on, a Zunow.
The crazy paint had largely faded away, and while we didn't manage to get the adjustable cup off in the limited time before closing, the fixed cup came off (easier to tap a wrench than a pin spanner). It was just appalling in there. I asked him where he had acquired it (always looking for local prospects) and he replied on E-Bay for $450, so he had some idea it was a nice bike. I implored him to build a winter bike, and when he starting talking about some touring frame he had, I cut him off and told him to find a serviceable mountain bike on the cheap and save what was left of the Zunow for better weather.
He couldn't leave it to stew in PB Blaster, and was reinstalling the bottom bracket from the fixed cup side as I was leaving :(

i dont have pictures... they guys were riding towards an area with bike racks but it looked like the bike racks were full so they hoped off thier bikes (while moving) and let them careen into a curb and crash into each other... then they gave each other high fives.
I guess bikes arent puppies... maybe im getting too attached to them.

I hate to admit it, but as kids we used to hop off our balloon tired singlespeeds (while moving) and let them run down this grassy hill. The one who could get his bike to go the longest distance won. There was a skill (?) in getting off a moving bike and have it run in an almost straight line. BUT I SWEAR we never ran them into curbs.

My bike is self-abusing right now... I can't bear to look.
And the grinding sound is painful.
