I've been offered upgrades up to about £200/$300 on my Dawes Discovery 201. Could add to that if necessary. Before anyone says why not get the next model up... that's a more costly, and the 201 will be less attractive to thieves than a 301 etc.

This isn't my main ride, but I'd like to make the 201 a bit better.

Anyone got any top suggestions for parts to make this a far nicer ride?

Is your bike stock, or have you already upgraded anything? Assuming it's stock, the first thing I would upgrade would be the grips. I like the Ergon GR-2's (which have an integrated bar end) to give me more options for hand positions.

It's stock.

I'm looking at wheels, cranks etc for a smoother, quality ride.

I'd add a rack, fenders, a handlebar bag, and possibly some basic panniers. Your bike then becomes more versatile.

One way to smooth the ride would be to upgrade the tires. Panaracer Grand Bois are really nice tires. I also like Shimano SPD clipless pedals and cycle shoes.

Is this your bike? Are you running the standard front fork? If so I'd keep it. The suspension fork just adds weight.

Sorry, should have said that mudguards, rack and pannier are already fitted.

What I'm looking at are components to make the bike ride better. For example, Mavic wheels etc etc

New wheels are expensive - but worth it. I built my machine new wheels with Mavic A719 rims, Ultegra hubs, and DT spokes - 3X 32H. Massive improvement. Got the money? Get some built.
