Forum Suggestions & User Assistance - Mods editing posts without informing users?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Is it normal for moderators to edit posts without informing the user who wrote the post?
My post in Foo HERE (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?617710-iHype&p=10319983&viewfull=1#post10319983) was edited by a moderator earlier today, and the only reason I found out is that I returned to the thread. Fortunately I saw the "Last edited by" comment below before I went to edit it myself, so I know who, when, why. I agree with the reason they made the change as they noticed something in my linked image I did not (although I originally found that link from another thread here).
Here is what bothers me:
1) Work with my 'name' is being edited without my knowledge.
2) Is there a record kept of this, so that if it happens enough times I get a temporary ban (is that the "points" ban?
3) If I've done something prohibited (especially unknowingly), wouldn't it make sense to tell me so that I don't do it again? If I'm not being told, how can I be expected not to become a repeat offender?

That stuff happens all the time. Don't sweat it :thumb:

Happens all the time or doesn't, my point is that it shouldn't happen.

Sometimes, it's just a quiet edit to keep the poster in compliance with the guidelines. We do have an edit trail, as you saw. Sometimes, the mods will slip in and correct a truly embarrassing spelling error, sometimes to break image tags, and they decide not to sanction. If you are headed toward a sanction at some point, we will give you plenty of warning, starting with a relatively unofficial PM, letting you know. We'll only escalate if that doesn't work.
If it's just a quiet edit and you don't get a PM, it's because we've assumed a couple or so possibilities,
A: Webmasters revenge: A hotlinked image had been substituted by a webmaster that got upset that you hotlinked to their image
B: Correct spelling so the word filter catches a word, but we opted to leave it at that
C: We're presuming an unintentional violation because you had no history of problem posting, and we took no further action

jccaclimber, our protocol is to let you know should you be coming close to any kind of banning. We work on the rule that bannings will happen after three infractions occur. If an offense is slight, we will issue a warning, or a 'yellow'. If the offense is more of a concern or the same one continues, an infraction, or a 'red' will be issued, with an explanation of which guideline was broken. It takes three 'reds' to earn a one week ban. Yellows do not count toward a banning but rather are reminders that we may chose to point out to you. Keep in mind that infractions do expire, and it takes three standing or active reds to be banned.
It's kind of hard to get banned, actually. :p
You as well as the the mods/admins will be able to see your yellows or reds. Nobody else can see them.
At this time you have nothing to worry about at all. Although we do edit things that we feel we need to and put our reason at the bottom as you have seen.

Mods have been editing my posts for years, sometimes deleting them altogether. Never once have I received an explanation. It's a BF thing, it comes with the turf.
sometimes they'll delete a post, and not inform you. if you decide to go backl and report, they'll give you an infraction.
in case you didn't realize it by now, mind reading is a requirement on bf. ;)

LOL. When I was a "free" member I never had any problems, as soon as I paid for my membership, I became a target immediately. I would receive an infraction, and receive a second infraction for daring to ask why I received the first. I think it all started when I publicly questioned the existence of God. I think that incensed the moderators and that's when the harassment started. A few years ago I was banned for disagreeing with US foreign policy. It's always very petty, arbitrary and capricious.
Moderators publicly promote the myth of fairness and conservative moderation, but anyone who's religious or political views differ from those of the moderators knows different.

Odd, I don't see that you have any infractions or even warnings (I just looked, since I don't remember you ever getting any in the time I've been on staff). I think I'd be able to, by the way, since I'm only the Site Administrator. As to your religious beliefs, or lack thereof. It's not a matter of our concern, although I am Atheist as well, so I really don't think you'd get any infractions from me for that reason, or any of my staff, either. ;) We also don't infract for proreligious beliefs, either. As to political stuff, that's cool as well, as long as you keep the politics and religion IN Politics and Religion.
By the way, if you don't have access to P&R, let me know, and I'll authorize it.

You've always been real square with me. :)
