Mountain Biking - Trek 820 Aluminum: Why only one year?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I just picked one of these up for use as a winter beater. I got a great deal on it, it has an aluminum frame so I'm not worried about it rusting and all the components are bottom-end so I can fix it cheep if something breaks. According to Bikepedia it was ONLY made in 1999. Does any one know why Trek only produced this bike for one year? My concern is that there was some sort of maunufaturing defect in the frames or something.
I have no idea other than some market anomaly where not enough sold. In 1999, my son bought an 830 aluminum as his first mountain bike. '99 was the only year for the alu. 830 as well. There is nothing wrong with the frame and it's still going strong. He used and abused it and moved on to FS bikes; it has now been 'handed down' to me and is my XC racer.
