Training & Nutrition - Duathlon training

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I competed in my first duathlon last October and thoroughly enjoyed. I am beginning to prepare for another in April and another in May. I feel like my training wasn't the most effective for my first race and I haven't been able to find much in terms of training programs.
I was wondering if anybody has or knows of where I can I find a good program. I'd really like to improve and was hoping to "pick the brain" of anybody with experience. Thanks for any help!

Its really quite complex.. You should google "periodization" and print off some information.
You pretty much have to work out when your first competition day is and work back.
Design a program split into months, weeks then days..
Base stage is early on (basic endurance.. high volume low intensity) You will have transition stages built into your program where you change the goals of your training.. (higher intensity, lower volume.. more work on technique) As you get closer to the competition day your training volume is minimal, intensity increases and you get more specific. You normally have 3 days- 1 week taper (right before comp day) where you lay off.. rest.. re-fuel and get race ready.
Thats a real basic run down.. you really need to read up on periodization. Everyone is different, so everyone trains differently but the guidelines are priceless.
I thought you didn't believe in that education stuff...

I had to look up duathlon to see what it is. Bike and Run, or Run, Bike & Run. I also see they have run and swim events, aquathlon.
Anyone heard of Bike/swim event for us with a bum knee? :(
