Hi,

I saw some old threads about the Megabus bike policy (no bikes), but I wanted to get an updated opinion and see if anyone has had any attempts at trying to get assembled bikes into the cargo section recently. I'm taking Megabus round trip from Philadelphia to Boston, which means I'll be taking 4 separate bus trips (transferring in NYC). Do you think I should try bringing my bike? I'm extra worried I'll get denied since I have so many separate trips, but I really want my bike with me.

Thoughts? (Thanks!)

megabus.com does not check luggage or provide receipts for luggage transported on the bus by the passenger. Passengers are advised that megabus.com will accept up to one piece of luggage per passenger. For guidance this should be no more than the size of a standard suitcase and should not weigh more than 50 pounds. Passengers can also take on board one small piece of luggage that must fit either on your lap or under the seat in front of you. Please be advised that passengers wishing to travel with more luggage than one standard sized suitcase and one small piece of luggage that can fit on your lap or under the seat in front of you may have items refused, depending on the availability of space.--http://us.megabus.com/luggage-allowance.aspx

The reason, I think, is that on the double-decker buses, the cargo bay underneath the floor is removed so the first deck seating is lower. No cargo bay means no room for bikes or luggage. It's not that they're being pricks or anything.

Greyhound still takes bikes and so does Amtrak. I've used both with good results.

I've ridden on Megabus before, and the double deckers I was on still had a big cargo compartment or two in the back. They did fit bikes, and I did see one full, not-in-case bike in the compartment. I was curious, so I asked the driver about bikes. He said that if there is space, they can put the bike in there, but it all depends on how many seats get sold on the bus. So, you might be able to bring a bike to somewhere, but not necessarily back.
