I took my son out this afternoon (after I finished a 35 mile road ride with some friends in the morning!) for a ride down the hill to our local bike trail. He has a new Trek "Mountain Lion 60" with six speeds and hand brakes this summer. He did so great riding safely with me on the neighborhood streets as well as controlling his speed down quite a major hill; I am so proud of him! By the time we had hit a couple parks and Dairy Queen, circled some empty parking lots just for fun, and gotten home, my computer read 9.2 miles. I know that my son put on more than that will all his extra circling and riding around the parks. Isn't that just awesome for a little kid? Of course his Dad and I are already planning our first family century!

By the way, do I get to count extra mileage for pulling a the 40 pound 4-year old brother in the Burley on those 9 miles? Or is it still just a total of 45 for the day?!

Just had to brag :D

Pretty impressive ride for a 6 year old, but man they sure can go when they don't weigh anything!

And no extra mile credit for the pull, just claim you road up more hills!

cool
I pushed mine on a 5 mile ride the other day and they were complaining lol
3 teenages
but to their defence they have only been riding regularly for a month or so
and not that far till the last couple of weeks
their Mother is afraid they will get out and get hurt
so they cant go far with out me and I'm disabled so it's taking longer for me to get used to it again

My daughter did a 20 mile bike-a-thon when she was 4 1/2. At the end of the ride she asked if she could go riding around the local school yard with her friends. We took it at an easy pace stopping several times in donut shops etc, for rest and refreshments. She is now talking about whether to get her daughter a bike with trainer wheels or a tricycle.

AndrewP,
Isn't that funny about how she wanted to keep on riding?! My son thought it was so cool to just ride circles through a parking lot on our way home. I guess as adults we are so focused on our starting point and our ending point that we fail to see that it would be fun to just ride loops in between!

I think the progress kids make in short time periods is incredible. We gave our 7 year old step-granddaughter a new bike, her first without training wheels, a month later she was shifting gears for hills and went on a 9-mile ride with her dad. I just wish I could make an equivalent skill jump in a month.
