Mountain Biking - 20 Stupid (or non stupid) reasons to wear a good helmet while mountain biking.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My friend (a member here) WHO DOES NOT WEAR A HELMET needs a knock in the head. Rest assured I will PM him this thread. Soooooooo.... Let's tell him why.

Reason #1. You got a five dollar head, wear a five dollar helmet.

Reason #2 you don't like your food to have the consistency of mush. Due to losing teeth and the possible broken jaw.

Reason #3. The rescue team needs something shiny to reflect the beam of their flashlights when they are looking for your cold dead body in the woods.

Because ladies don't like comatose dudes with diaper rash???
It's easier to go all out knowing I can whack my head w/o really worrying much, if absolutely necessary.
I like my head to be more the shape of a grape than a wrinkled raisin.
Brains are for inside my head, not outside.
Because "It looks dorky" or "It feels uncomfortable" is a lame ass excuse.

Best reason for me:
What I learned from smashing my head on a rock at high & speed cracking the helmet is:
When you fall even on the most mundane surface your body can land in a way where you have NO control over preventing your head from smashing into whatever hard surface is there.
It was incredible! But my head felt so comfy, had no helmet been there my skull would have broke.

Riding MTB, eventually you will fall and you will hit your head.

(Also wear eye protection. You might poke your eye out, kid.)

#15 Because if you rock the full face + goggles, no one can tell who the hack who keeps crashing is.

Bonus: And when you hit your head, you can get back on the bike and ride away before they come over and figure out who you are!

I don't buy helmets because of Fashion. I buy them when I break them. normally about every 12 to 18months. In 20 years of cycling-I have only been concussed once. That helmet was in 3 pieces on the ground.

A fall like that can happen when you least expect it too, it doesn't even need to be on a trail..

Few years ago I was riding down my street, and a few kids were kicking a ball around. One of them decided it would be funny to kick it in my general direction, but due to the way the ball bounced (Keep in mind this was an Aussie football - egg-shaped) it rolled under my front wheel. Despite my relatively low speed, I went over the bars and hit my head directly on the corner of a concrete gutter. Had I not been wearing a helmet, that would have done some serious damage.

I searched as well, but to no prevail. I believe a friend of his family created an account and posted some stuff in the bmx forum.

Edit: Found it, was in this forum.

I pass through Markville about once a month and I'm reminded of Revmonkey every time.

Do I always wear a lid when I ride? Yes.

Do I think an inch of Styrofoam can prevent many of these deaths? No.

dminor

Snell Memorial Foundation may beg to differ.

Come to think of it, an inch of styrofoam inside a nice fibergals shell did wonders for me in a 50 mph pileup at Hannegan Speedway in Bellingham, WA back around 1972.

OH and FYI ~ My friend took his new bike out for its virgin mtb ride. He wore a full faced helmet that he borrowed.

He biffed it good. Real good. From what I understand landed on the side of his face.

Glad he wore that helmet. Thanks for all of your support.

Snell Memorial Foundation may beg to differ.

Indeed.

Fun fact: I commuted to work this morning wearing a ASTM F-1952 certified lid. But in a high-speed-car-overtaking accident of the type I've been reading so frequently lately? I might as well be wearing my tinfoil hat.

Note that I live in a town where cyclists riding legally get run over by cement trucks, and the cyclist's lack of a helmet seems to the be the focal point of the accident investigation.

But I'll keep my BS on the "helmets" thread in A&S, if the mods stop deleting it.

My helmet almost certainly saved my life recently.

I was hitting a jump at a local spot, thought to myself "yeah, this time I'll really go for it and not brake before hitting it" and... went completely over the bars, landed on my head and elbows. I couldn't move for a few minutes, thought I was going to have to get airlifted. After I managed to get up, I noticed my helmet was wobbling about. Turns out it had cracked on impact in about fifty different places. I'd rather the helmet have taken the impact then my head. I might post pics at some point (I'm not at home at the moment) because it serves as a good reminder, even my cyclist friends were freaked out by it.

Back before we used to have guns or knives i'm pretty sure we tried to hit people on the head with rocks to kill them. If you are deep in the woods and encounter a cromag man like polly shore did and u have a helmet on then when he tries to kill you(mistaking you for some type of gazelle or perhaps attempting to steal rachel welch) you will have rendered his mode of attack useless!

If you don't have a helmet on then you probably haven't evolved much since cromagnon man's time and will likely become tonight's roast.
