So the deal is, when my wife learns to ride a bike, she takes my current mountain bike and I can get that dream Orbea Orca road bike I want.

She's made a ton of progress (considering we've only started last week). We're doing the no pedals and roll downhill and moved on to putting the pedals tonight. She actually made one revolution before thinking got in the way but it's been amazing progress. Any advice as to how to ease her on to the next step/s?

On a selfish note, I'm unsure if I should buy the bike as soon as my wife can go on her own (which is probably very soon) or if I should wait till October and see if the 2005 models come out. Orbeas are not as common as Treks or Specialized and I can't seem to get a date from anyone as to when the 2005s come out. I just don't want to drop the $$$ on a bike and find out 1-2 months later that I can get a better deal or that there's a color scheme more to my liking. Any thoughts?

Orbea got a lot of press out of the TDF, so I suspect they are going to be a little harder to find easily. I get a lot of comments on mine, but it's not a high-zoot Orca ($$$$), so I can only imagine the kind of reaction you will get to THAT bike. I would wait for the 2005 and then swing the best deal I can on a 2004...you save a lot of bucks that way! JMHO.

Any idea when that would be though? On the one hand I want to save on the other I'm riding by the bike shop everyday like a stalker waiting to punce... :D

The LBS where I bought mine (Aspin) already has that model for $150.00 LESS than what I paid for mine in March. :-(

Just a quick update..

the wife rode from end to end of our block today. I was so proud.

I especially liked the part when she started screaming, better start ordering that road bike!!!!

Anyway I just felt like sharing.

How old is the wife? I'm always amazed when I hear of someone past 12 that can't ride a bike.

24. She's one of those "had a traumatic experience (actually her dad did while teaching her) and never rode again type" people.

I have to admire her for just sucking it up and deciding to want to learn. Plus it's great progress for just 1 and a half weeks worth of riding.

Damn.... I thought this thread was going to be about "Wife's almost got it figured out why we like to spend so much time on our bikes and not with her". :D

Oh well, I'll keep searching for the answer so I can explain it to her.....

Well actually in a roundabout way it is.

Get the wife to ride and then she can see why you need the all carbon frame with full dura-ace space age whatevers.... :)

The downside ofcourse being she'll probably start getting the same stuff if not better than yours.

I am in the same situation in a sence, i justy got off chemotharipy 2 weeks ago and have tryed to get back in the loop of just spinning around the block (yes i am serous it is hard to ride around a block right now...) well as i was clipin in the other day hear the goradge door open at her house and out she comes in full bike gear with what must be a early 90's cannondale mountan bike. "i am comin too!" She screams, almost brought a tear to my eye...

I witnessed the result of just that. I met a couple on a ride where the husband was on a Look KG381 with full Campy Record and Ksyrium wheels. His wife was riding a Giant TCR Elite with full Dura-Ace and newer Ksyriums. He told me that the way to get his wife interested in cycling was to get her a real nice bike. He also confessed to having the urge to swap wheelsets between his bike and hers. She glared at him when he said that though.

Hey, I got goose bumps when I read Lopez's quote. "No Legs" did bring a tear to my eye. Great stuff. Always get the wife a nicer bike than you ride (when she's ready), these ladies deserve it. You're lucky guys!

I always heard that to keep in good graces, buy your wife a bike just a bit better than yours.
