For four years I have been riding my Specialized Hard Rock 2.5 or 3 miles (one way) to work, mostly over quiet semi-hilly backoads. The drivetrain is trashed so I was thinking of upgrading to an all-out road bike for my commute, mostly because I like to go fast. Any suggestions for this purchase? I was lucky enough to ride the Cannondale R800 (the very top of my price range) today and unfortunately am now spoiled rotten. Is a bike this nice durable enough for daily commuting? I only really haul my lunch and a few papers. Also, I am thinking of converting my old Specialized to a SS/FG for use in inclement weather. Is this a good idea/feasible? I can refer to another forum for the specifics if need be. Thanks!

If it has horizontal drops then it is a good idea and feasible. Take it to a bike shop and ask them to give u an estimate for doing the job. (Redish the rear wheel, pull off gear crap, put freewheel on and possibly a new chain.)

As for using an expensive bike for a commute you are going 6 miles a day, honestly you can ride anything u want at that range, even a Walmart bike.

If you have ridden to work everyday for 4 years thats about um, 2000 miles and since gas is now 2 bucks a gallon that means you have 4000 dollars to spend on your bike.

Enjoy! :-)
