you have to arrange yuour sport to fit your personal life e.g girlfriend (NOT DRINKING!) not the other way around. I mix the two....go and stay with the g/f and have dinner, watch a movie, then eave at the crack of dawn for a sunday bunch ride (she lives in city, im out of town)

.... and for those who have boyfriends or husbands? :)
As for me, I agree with what NZLcyclist says. You need to find the balance.
I love spending time with my wife and our kids but I also love cycling. It doesn't have to be an either / or situation. I find time for both during the week.
However, if I ever had to choose between family and cycling - it'd be family.

Once one gets married..Impressing one another is a given..You have your time together and your time apart...Since you are sorta stuck with one another, one would say you have your time alone and your time alone. Maybe more time for your sport? When you get back She Might be home?
As long as your quality time together causes one to appreciate the other . Ideal situation..Get a tandem and chain her to the saddle until she likes the sport...Only works for married people.

There are some weekends that I spend the whole time with my girlfriend (ok maybe a 16km TTT early on sunday morning), and because of that she is ok when I spend a whole weekend away racing (this particularly so because we live 50km apart, and I only see her on the weekends)

If you put your gf on a tandem, and she only half pedals, do you not get quite the work out with her butt atop the saddle..So another benefit for you.?
I fully agree that balance is the key. It is way too easy to get caught up in cycling and miss the 'life' part of living.
I'd have to have a GF to answer that question.
what would you rather do?? go ride or go out with girlfriend??
Too many variables.
Go out where? Movies? Party? Football game? Shopping for women's shoes? Her mother's house?
What's the weather like?
How's the relationship going? New and blissful? Or bitter and combative?
How long since I've gone riding? How long since I've gone out?
Easy answer: Find a girlfriend that's into riding.
It's easy in our house. My wife rides with me. I do get an opportunity to ride for an hour or so every day at lunch, so I try to work on intervals, sprints, etc. then, and can just enjoy the ride when we are out together. However, if I had to choose between riding alone, and being with her doing something else, riding would wait. Fortunately, we have very similar interests. She would rather ride, fish, kayak, backpack, etc. than go shopping, visit relatives, etc. I'm a very lucky man!

Easy answer.
Go cycling WITH your girlfriend. It rocks :)
Wow, all of you peeps that chose to go cycling without your girlfriend... need a big *****slap.
I'm pretty much the sole (serious) cyclist in the family. With us it has all come down to a system. Monday nights I get to do a club ride. Tuesday nights grandpa (me) gets to babysit grandson while grandma and mom go to bingo. Son-in-law takes care of the farm chores that night. The rest of the week it is 4-H and kids coming to work their animals. Towards the weekends we get horses ready for horse shows. We all show together on the weekends. The wife is quite an accomplished show person and usually beats me handily. During most of the week I get my cycling fix by commuting. It all works out so everyone has a little time to themselves and then we are together on the weekends all doing something we enjoy.

i need my time on the bike, the same way i need sleep. for me it's just something i have to do, no question about it. fortunately, i have a gf that wants me to ride and train and do well in races, etc. she's not a rider herself, but is very supportive of my 'hobby'. so, for me, there really isn't a choice to be made. i'll always see her after a ride and she is okay with that.
