I'm 44, 5-11, about 175-180...for now...and I used to race and ride, 10 years ago. I have always purchased my riding gear on sale off season or through auction...could care less if it matches as long as it's functional. I look okay on the bike, but this morning I went out in my usual mix and match criminal of style way, Limar PINK T-Mobile helmet, Red Saeco jersey, 'dale 8 panel black bibs, and blue/yellow northwave shoes...all on an orange and black orbea...oh yeah, purple giro water bottle, old school all the way. But nobody would mistake me for a pro...get it?
So....since I am getting back into this thing, I am extending my miles every weekend and I'm riding a very hilly 30 miler when I see two guys riding toward me, one with full Postal kit, the other with an old Banesto kit, both matching all the way...for reference, I don't have issues with this...I kind of dig the Saeco jersey and like paying homage to euro pros...riding nice bikes, Trek and Look (you don't see many Looks around here so I was kind of gassed), so I gave them the "dang, I'm old, hill is long, I'm not Iban Mayo" hand wave...with no response. Oh well...maybe they were "concentrating!"
Of course, I see these guys about an hour later when they come out of nowhere catch me on some rollers, and do the "ricer blow by" (import car drivers will understand this reference) except I grab a wheel out of spite and say "hey!" They look a little surprised and when they sit up, Postal man says, "we saw you before, did you know that you are wearing a Saeco jersey and a T-Mobile helmet?" and Banesto dude says "Yeah, those are two different teams!"
I started laughing and they looked at me like I was out of my bird...so I said "I've got an Once jersey at home for those days I want to be REALLY pink!"
They turned at the next road, but the way they turned, one guy barely making the turn, I think Postal might have been a little freaked by the "pink" comment.
I say it takes a MAN to wear a pink helmet.
People worry about some strange stuff.
