It's Official. Bicycling Magazine Endorses Blueberry Pie

Check out page 40 of the latest (March 2010) Bicycling Magazine, and what does one see?

A blueberry pie along with recipe.

And the story tells about a person who changed his life through cooking and cycling, especially baking and eating blueberry pies.

And, only 491 calories per slice!!

The article states, "Look forward to pie after a long, hard ride."

They must have heard about the 50+ forum's annual "blueberry pie ride."

Great. Now the price of pies is going to go up and you'll only be able to eat them with carbon forks.

Only 491 calories per slice. That means that for each hour of riding I would have to have a slice of PIE to replace the energy I am losing. Sounds good to me.

I'm certainly glad it's blueberry! That's my 2nd favorite pie (after rhubarb), and well worth the extra miles and extra hours on the bike.

And Blueberry- Found a supplier of Blueberry plants in the UK. Might be trying to grow my own as they are difficult to find over here.

Bicycling magazine definitely has its faults, but I truly think many people judge it far too harshly. I often find some very interesting and informative content in it. I think some of its harshest critics don't even bother to read it before attacking it.

Well, that certainly proves that Blueberry Pie is only a recreational food, not a utility food.

Oh yeah! Rhubarb pie! Yummmmm....

Reminds me of what happened a little while ago. We have red rhubarb growing in our yard. One of the techs in the clinic was from Alabama and told me he had a hunger for some good rhubarb pie. So my spouse baked him one. He didn't come to work for a couple days. When he came back I asked him how he enjoyed the pie. A bit embarassedly he told me: "I ate the whole pie" Me: "You mean you didn't share with anyone?" "Nope"

Guess that explains his absence, eh?

+1! I also enjoy them on oatmeal. I grew up on a blueberry farm in BC (the real blueberry capital :) )so supply wasn't an issue. We used to freeze the surplus berries of course and I enjoyed them frozen as a cool snack on a hot summer day. Sure beats a popsicle!

Not my favorite pie though..

Price of an entry-level blueberry pie: $199.
A beater blueberry pie can be had at WalMart for $50 but it will be heavy and not hold up well.
Blueberry pies are available in Ti pie pans but they are pricey. Not much lighter than a pie in an AL pie pan but they are great on rough roads.

Hmmm, Just reading that while Maine doesn't lay claim to being the Blueberry Capital, they do produce 99% of the US market low bush Blueberries. That equates to 25% of the world supply.

Michigan outproduces Maine on Highbush Blueberries though.

It appears there are many ways to define a capital. ;)

But NJ does have a nice sign.:)

Going to rethink that growing my own bit for blueberries. My daughter bought some round tonight from her freezer.

Think I'll stick to Rhubarb or Apple.

I like blueberries just about as much as the next person and maybe even a bit more. That being said, however, the piece of apple pecan crunch pie that I had at Irma's this day sure did taste mighty fine.

I think the only fair way to settle the blueberry championship is for each contestant to send me a season's supply of their best berries.

As the blueberry season tapers to a delicious, teeth staining finale I'll announce a winner.

Yeah, that's the ticket.
