Road Bike Racing - Doesn't seem fair

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Was watching the olympics today. 2 women were in the lead of the pack. One cyclist lead the last part while the other cyclist just drafted. Then at the last second the cyclist that had drafted for a long peroid of time passed the girl that had fought all of the wind resistance.
Lance did this too in one of the stages. He zipped up his jersey and sped on by after drafting for a lenghty time.

Tough noogies. I hope the ACLU doesn't get involved.

Well that is race tatics. Wait for track cycling with track stands and all. Problem is you cannot do that in a road race or the peleton will catch, just ask some riders from the Tour de France.

Yeah... Judith Arndt didn't seem too happy about it either...

Apparently she thought that had the German Cycling Federation picked her friend Petra Rossner who's a good sprinter, they could have taken the gold. Or at least that's how the story goes...
At anyrate, Carrigan played it smart and attacking while her teammate, Wood, controlled the chase was good tactics.

G'day,
sure you are on the right forum?.....the 'bleeding hearts' forum is further along!

lol....the "I don't know anything about bike racing" forum.
Watching the race on Saturday night, my father in law asked "Why isn't Lance racing? Is the Olympics too hard for him?"
Sigh...

Arndt chose to sit in front. I don't remember her making any significant efforts to force Carrigan to the front. They had enough time on the chasers that some cat and mouse games could have been played.

Judging by the man's signature (Rangers Lead The Way), and assuming he is/was with the 75th, I think it's a safe bet that he is the last person you'd consider to be a bleeding heart.

G'day,
I couldn't care less if he's a ranger or the Ayatollah. Either way, posting a thread like this to a 'racing' forum shows total ignorance of the sport,
cheers,

I didn't say it didn't.
If you read my post, you'll see I said odds are he's not a bleeding heart.
I didn't mention racing once.

G'day,
fair enough......so with all this 'ultimate fighting' stuff you were talking about the other day, (training etc), where do you find the time for racing bikes?.....the 2 aren't exactly the most compatible sports around!,
cheers,

Maybe it's a better attempt at merging the two sports than what's been discussed in this previous thread (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=47543). :D
I don't race. I'm way too big to even begin to think of being competitive. What's the point of racing if you can't be competitive? I do some solo rides to wherever for fun when I can fit it into my schedule.
I just love the sport. I'm a big fan.

g'day,
'big maggie' has proven that size doesn't necessarily rule you out form being competitive!...but I know what you mean...still I reckon your 'general' fitness would make you a chance in the lower grades, (cat's). I saw this bloke at a race not long back, fair dinkum, I thought it was Arnold Swartzzenegger (however you spell it)...he was huge.....his wasn't in my cat, but I heard later that he 'took off' right from the start & got to the top of the KOM before they caught him....ended up winning in sprint.....I haven't seen him since & didn't hear him say "I'll be back",
cheers,
Hitchy
You're right about that, but you'll have to take into consideration that I have 40 - 50 pounds on Backstedt. Still, the nutrition, training, and general fitness concepts that goes along with training to win a bike race and training to win a fight are vastly different.
I imagine I'll race at least once before I die, so I'll let you know how it turns out. ;)

g'day devil,
No excuses my man....you might be 50 lb heavier than 'Big maggie', but he's riding against Pro's. Your weight disadvantage against the lower cat riders wouldn't be that much more than Maggies' against some of the 'muppets' he has to race against. (Just don't choose hiily races :)). i think its a pity that a bloke as passionate as you about this sport has talked himself out of having a go at it!...I reckon you'll find that a lot of the disiplines that make you a good fighter, will be transferable to cycle racing, ie mental toughness, torso strength, probably leg strength, overall general fitness etc etc. Whilst I haven't seen anyone get punched lately, (excluding mcewen's effort in the TDF).....:) C'mon forum members, help me out here...lets get devil racing!,
cheers,
Hitchy

Maybe they should take it to the Italian courts.

Exactly... that was blatant intimidation! :D
