General Cycling Discussion - Second time is one month ! I blew out a spoke on my rear tire

Its happen on the same road , same place . Its a slight decent with some high speed curve . I hear a pop and my rear wheel is whacked . allways one spoke broken . Should I upgrade ? Or perhaps was it the mechanic who fixed it the 1st time it broke didnt do it right ? My LBS was closed the 1st time I blew the spoke out , so I went to a shop that is mainly for mountain bikes . Any comments are welcomed

After you break a spoke, if all that you do is to replace the broken spoke and retrue whe wheel, all that you've done is to return the wheel to what it was before. What it was before was a wheel that was going to break a spoke soon.

When you have a flat tire, it's important to figure out what caused the flat so that you can correct the underlying problem. Otherwise, you'll continue to have frequent flat tires. When you break a spoke, you also have to analyze the cause. Otherwise you are going to be cursed with continued broken spokes.

Most broken spokes are caused by inadequate spoke tension which allows the bend to wiggle around in the hub flange until it fatigues and breaks. The cure is to make sure that the spokes have adequate tension and to make sure that all of the spokes have nearly equal tension so that there are no loose spokes to wiggle about. I'm betting that your bike mechanic didn't do that.
