Mountain Biking - Old School hardtail or new but low end full suspension?

I have a restores 2000 Rockhopper (9 speed Deore, V-brakes) and now am considering buying a ~2007 K2 Sidewinder (8 speed Alivio, mech disc brakes) to have a more comfy ride and better traction - I like hitting the singletracks and rough stuff. Is it worth considering for recreational cross country riding, and possibly the occasional trip to a freeride park?

I'd stick to the hard tail. I rode one of the side winders before actually, and it was way too bouncy.

Well, that was overhwelming. I'll stick with the hardtail. I like being able to carry 2 bottles anyway.

I only considered buying the K2 because the asking price was $100. Looks like the guy sold it anyway. Some day in the distant future (maybe my 40th or 50th b-day), I'll buy a couple of new, fancy shmancy bikes.

My 19-pound hardtail is almost as fast as my 16lb road bike:
