Road Cycling - Steel frame

I am looking for a steel frame bike with carbon fork and at least ultegra components. I have considered buying the frame separate, and building up the bike, but would rather find a good complete bike for under $2000. I have looked at the Cervelo super prodigy, does anyone else have any suggestions? Thanks.

Total price came to $1410 - it's an off-brand italian steel frame with full Ultegra, a cheap carbon fork, triple and shipping costs.

the Jamis Quest is a good value in a steel bike and it has full Ultegra and a full carbon fork for $1299. (it doesn't come in my size though)

you could also look at a Gunnar Roadie, although they're a bit pricey and will sometimes still come with only 105.

i wish there were more steel options.

with your budget there are few full carbon frame bikes you can get too - the Giant TCR composite 2, the Scattante - you almost have enough to get a Trek 5000 don't you?

I saw an '04 Specialized Roubaix Comp for $1750 at Hudson Trail Outfitters the other day. again, not my size - but how sweet a deal is that?

I know you probably meant little known brand when you said off brand, but for the sake of the uninformed, your Viner is a very old, prestigious Italian marquee that unfortunately doesn't have a wide distribution in the US because of marketing. Something like a Torelli is an off brand, but not a Viner. :)

If you like the classic retro lug look then look a Cinelli SuperCorsa ($895 frame and fork only, figure another $650 for either Campy Centaur or $600 Shimano Ultegra plus $300 for wheels) at GVHbikes.com. There is also the classic look of Gios Compact Pro at www.excelsports.com; complete with Campy Chorus kit (includes wheels) for $2099 or Centaur for three hundred less (includes wheels) or with Ultegra for $1869.

You might try to find an Orbea dealer and see if Orbea has any full bikes in that range. I think you could probably build up an Orbea Zona (I think that's the name of the frame) with good parts for what you want to spend, but I don't know off the top of my head what those framesets go for. Orbea's a good one, though.

well that's good news! i only chose it because i'm too tall for a lot of steel bikes and everybody here likes GVH.

I think I have narrowed it down to viner, cervelo, pinerello, bianchi. Lemond seems too pricey. Any other input would be greatly appreciated.

Well, Albert Eisentraut is building bikes since 1959, and he's not big on website or advertising. His website is disgusting, but his bikes are sweet. He knows how to make bikes that fit you, and he has enough work to continue to be busy without any advertising.. call him on the phone (he will answer) and he'll tell you what frames cost..
