I live in Germany, where drinking sparkling water (i.e. with carbonation) is very popular as the principal source for water. People chose their water based on the contents of various minerals (like low sodium) or just on taste. I myself have quite grown to like it.
My question: does drinking carbonated water contribute negatively to performance (on the bike or any endurance sport)? I do not mean in the water bottle, rather in general as the main source for water.
I have heard that this is true, but never seen it confirmed. The theory is, rather obviously, that one is injesting a gas that the lungs and heart are working hard to remove from the blood.
I have not, by the way, myself noticed any performance discount (or benefits).
Cheers,
