I live in Germany, where drinking sparkling water (i.e. with carbonation) is very popular as the principal source for water. People chose their water based on the contents of various minerals (like low sodium) or just on taste. I myself have quite grown to like it.

My question: does drinking carbonated water contribute negatively to performance (on the bike or any endurance sport)? I do not mean in the water bottle, rather in general as the main source for water.

I have heard that this is true, but never seen it confirmed. The theory is, rather obviously, that one is injesting a gas that the lungs and heart are working hard to remove from the blood.

I have not, by the way, myself noticed any performance discount (or benefits).

Cheers,
J.M. Lee

I doubt very much that it would impair performance to consume carbonated water rather than plain.

The only disadvantage I'm aware of is that the carbonic acid may slowly attack tooth enamel.

But cyclists get all their teeth knocked out eventually anyway, right? :D

P. S. I almost forgot to say willkommen! I hope you will post frequently--there are already several European and UK members and they're a BIG part of what makes the Forums so good.

There are No Ill Effects regarding Carbonated Water and or Seltzer Water either without sodium. I've done extensive research regarding both during the last five years and have found no negative reports to date. I am quite active in MTB, Road Racing, Touring, Martial Arts and Weight Training, Cross Country Skiing. Soon I will master the art of swimming so I can try a Biathalon. So rest easy now that you know for sure. If you need further convincing I can provide reliable resources for you to check out. Peace, Jeannie
