I just got my KMC X10SL chain in gold. Looks really cool, and is super light. I'm just worried about the coating, it's really heavy and sticky. I usually keep the factory lube on with Shimano and SRAM chains, but the stuff on this KMC is heavier. Should I degrease it or keep it on?

keep it on, the factory lube is nice stuff. degrease and start new once the chain needs it.

Do whatever you like. The grease won't hurt, but it sure will attract grit, if you're riding in gritty conditions like most of us are right now. Wiping the exterior with mineral spirits will help, but the grease will ooze out of the chain for quite awhile.

Pfft, that's totally wrong. You should always grease the taper.

Isn't that heavy coating called cosmoline? If you really wanna blast it off, use brake cleaner. I'd just leave it on there. If it's good enough for weaponry, its good enough for a chain.

Pee on your chain and it will be fine.
