Mountain Biking - is a women's trek alright for man?

I just bought a trek 6700 and I am really liking it. I liked it so much I suggested it to a friend. He got on ebay and found a 2004 trek 6700 but it is the wsd(women's design). He got the bike for $500, are there any major differences between his and mine, they are both 18". Thanks spencer

Does it fit? That's the proof in the pudding. Who cares about the label. If he's really concerned about it, he can always paint over the "WSD" label or something. To compare the geometries, you might want to check out Trek's published geometry specifications (http://www.trekbikes.com/bikes/2004/pdf/2004_geometry_en.pdf). Other differences will probably also include shorter cranks and shorter stem. The color.

is it just me or is the only difference the saddle. the crank and stem were exactly the same on khuon's reply. thanks for the info, if anyone else sees anything different besides the saddle, please tell. i cant believe the only difference is the saddle.

Download the PDF file for the geometry and you'll notice sizing differences such as relative shorter effective toptubes, as well as head/seat tube angle differences between the 6700 and 6700WSD frames. Of course the frame sizes are different as 6700 comes in 15.5"-21.5" in 2" increments while the 6700WSD goes from 14"-18" in 2" increments so it's a little hard to compare but even through interpolation, you can tell that the WSD frames are more "compact" (I'm not talking just sloping top-tube here).

Thanks for the help. I see the numbers now. I compared the 18 women with 17.5 men. It seemed all to be small differences, but can someone tell if these small differences are likely to make a difference. thanks

I think they will. Take the effective top-tube for instance. That's a 1" reach difference. To make up for it, you would have to lengthen the stem by a good 20mm which can effect weight distribution and steering. Also, notice the trail. That .3" longer trail on the WSD frame will make the bike more stable but less nimble. It will be slower in steering. You'd be surprised at how minute changes in certain portions of the geometry can effect handling and fit.
