Foo - Livestrong Irony

So I'm out having a couple of cocktails Saturday night and I noticed a young lady standing next to me with a LiveStrong band on. Then I notice her smoking. I tap her on the shoulder and I say, "Kind of ironic don't you think?". She smiles obviously clueless to what I am pointing out and asks, "What's ironic?". I say, "The fact that you are wearing the LiveSrong band supporting cancer research and the fact that you are smoking." She really didn't have an aswer for me.

Theres one in my bar too.

Maybe she's thinking they need more test subjects?

A lot of things are carcinogenic.

She's actually making a wise investment, perhaps the research that comes from her contribution will save her life later on.

Things that i've done this summer that may cause cancer, all while wearing my livestrong bracelet.

Was out in the sunlight without proper sunblock.
Swam in a lake near a nuclear power facility.
Ate fish from said lake.
Ate fish from local lakes/rivers.
Swam in ocean (jersey shore)
Ate all sorts of terrible foods, including a few which contained nutrasweet I'm sure.
Smoking (several different herbs)
Drinking.
using my cellular phone.
Drank water containing chlorine (linked to cancer)
Didn't eat enough fiber
Didn't take my vitamins
ate a lot of red meat (linked to prostate cancer, according to some research)
Breathed city air
Rode my bike in traffic and inhaled exhaust fumes.
Had x-rays taken.

Not proud of my behaviors, many of them could be remedied -- but the simple fact is that being alive often causes cancer. So i support research, aide for young cancer victims, and I hope for the best.

"Don't drink, don't smoke, what do ya do??" My friends sing this around me ALL the time. But they all come crawling to me when it's time to drive home!! There is something to be said for being a "goodytwoshoes". And they rag on me for my occasional endulgance in a handful of Cheetoes?? "How can you eat that poison" they say...now that is irony!! I never heard of Cheetoes giving you cancer...although they will probably link that to something and I'll be in the hospital by November-orange fingers and all!

The thing is, is that everyone here knows about LAF and the Livestrong bracelet (why it's yellow, what it stands for, etc., etc.) but the general public is clueless! They wear it because it's the in thing and probably for no other reason. Heck, I think I saw footage of John Kerry wearing one while he was passing thru Idaho not to mention all the celebs.

Nice. I never expected the personal attacks, but I did put myself out there.

Why do people wear the LiveStrong band? Is it the latest fashion craze? For some it is and that is what I was getting at. The smokers here obviously got all up in arms over what appeared to be an attack on their lifestyle. Maybe it was, but I was merely pointing out that people support causes and jump on bandwagons without even knowing or caring why. To me, I would compare someone smoking and wearing a LS band like someone wearing a red ribbon for AIDS and then going out and having unprotected sex. Or someone in MADD getting a DUI.

Smoke all you want, I don't care. Just don't tell me you are supporting a cause when in fact you are clearly not. Maybe, as many of you have pointed out I'm wrong. Someone may think that smoking and the effects that it has on the body has nothing to do with cancer and the LS band. Fine. Not everyone views things the same way. I saw the LS band as not only a symbol of your donation but also a reminder to do what you can in this war on cancer. My weekend drinking? Maybe I jumped the gun and didn't take a look at my own personal lifestyle. But I'm willing to bet the second hand smoke that I receive from going out at a bar is going to kill me a lot faster than the beers I drink. As for my lines, maybe that's why I am single, :rolleyes: .

I'd say its a combination of the lines, glaring condescension, and a desire to patronize at every turn.

So you should be doing what you can to fight cancer? Like boycotting bars where you'll be subjected to secondhand smoke? Like working towards passing laws in your town to make bars smoke free? Going to a bar where you know you'll be exposed to second hand smoke isn't all that different from smoking on your own. You're still choosing to inhale the smoke my friend, second or first hand. Your similies don't translate well -- show me that a portion of the LS band proceeds to go anti-tobacco efforts, and I'll change my mind.

You know, some smoker (like myself) could so easily post a "i wear my livestrong band to remember (fill in blank with friend or relative who dealt with cancer) " and then you might feel bad cause your definition of what it means is different from theirs, and they've got a good reason to rock the LS band even though they smoke. Keep sticking your nose in, I'm sure you'll hear a lot of those stories.

What's gonna kill you, long before the second hand smoke or the beers you drink, is the stress from worrying about what everyone else is doing, making it your place to butt in on their lives, etc. etc..

i'm going to have a smoke.
