Touring - If I get layed off I'm going on a tour

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Just sayin'.

Here in Illinois there is a big budget crisis. They're starting to cut $ to schools. I'm a teacher. If they get me I'll go for a long bike ride.

Go for it. I did the same in '99 after being laid off. I ended taking two yearsa off and doing three long tours. Fortunately, though, I got a decent severance package and was able to flop with mom when not traveling. It was well worth the sacrifices..

Go for it just make sure you take the route South. Yeah it's really bad right now with the state deep in the hole.

My contract runs out in March. I'm looking forward to it (but only because I have things starting to line up afterwards).

Good luck with it all.

First things first, my friend. You might prefer touring to working.

Good idea, just be aware that if you plan on collecting unemployment benefits you technically shouldn't leave the state (IIRC from my time laid off).

Are you confusing that with your parole by any chance?

That's not the case in my state as long as you continue to look for work and declare that you are "able and available" to work. In my state you cannot collect if you leave the country, however.

I think that sounds like a grand idea!

I'm a teacher.
Hate to be the one to nitpick, but "layed" isn't a word. Shame on you :).
