I just recently picked up a set of clipless pedals/shoes (M520/Louis Garneau). They work great - really nice going uphill :)

I did notice when I attached the cleats to the bottom of each shoe that there was two mounting positions .. one about 1/4 inch behind the other. I choose the forward mounting position (coin toss) but I'm not sure if this is correct.

What factors determine the mounting point of the cleats (forward or back)?

thanks in advance! :)

Most people forward mount; but back mounting can be fun for a change.

As a rule of thumb, you want to mount the cleat so that the ball of the foot is over the spindle of your pedal. Therefore, it all depends on the anatomy of your foot. Placing the cleat back of the ball will force you to use more of your quad muscles - placing the cleat in front of the ball will force you to use more lower leg muscles. Play around, and see what works best for you - keeping in mind the rule of thumb stated above. Good luck!
