anyone have anything to say about the brand? i'm looking at the hubs, and they're incredibly light.

the lock ring and axle caps are crap.

but, you can build a light wheelset, even with the 32's.

I think they're for jock, support the troops, Oakley blade wearing track racers.

i sow one instance of a hub flange failure on a radial laced road wheelset. despite the post above, i would be more inclined to look at a white industries hub.

it sounded as if you were making a sarcastic comment about phil, white, and zipp equipment (due to price)

I'm sorry, what exactly is funny, or as you seem to imply--not cool--about supporting the troops?

I guess since I'm riding a fixed gear in a combat zone whilst killing babies and voting for Bush and McCain that I'm automatically not cool enough to be around here.

Well, I didnt say anything is not cool about supporting the troops but while we're on the topic....**** the troops and the people who support them.

Today I saw a bike with a rear zipp disc wheel secured to a rack on a bus.
Either he was going to a race at the track, or he's a dirty ******** ******* who doesn't deserve the zipp.

To keep this on topic: American Classic hubs are expensive.

Dhare, were you beat up a lot by jocks in high school? If the word "America" bothers you so much that it causes emotional fits, then I pity you for living where you do. And I pity your students, if they have to listen to this stuff in your classes. There are much more effective ways of voicing your concerns about America and Americans. I would probably agree with you on a lot of stuff, but I have less of an emotional problem about it, clearly.

Moving on....you are correct, the name American Classic is stupid, but it has nothing to do with troops or other American evils. If AC were truly an American classic (like Ford or Schwinn) then the name wouldn't be American Classic. There are a lot of dumb names, like Kenda Qwick, Dura Ace, Nikon Coolpix, and iPod. But thats not a good reason not to buy them.

That said, AC stuff is silly light, and I've heard lots about durability issues, not just with track hubs. Personally, if my goal were light weight, I would just run a Novatec hub in the rear (which is also light with its hollow axle) and use a light Novatec or Formula road hub built specifically for radial lacing with bolt-on skewer up front.

Am I to infer from this that you think American troops are evil? I hope not, as that would be a gross generalization and inaccurate representation of American society. I happen to be a Vietnam vet, and although I feel that this was a very bad war that should not have been fought, I do not see why the draftee participants should be villified. When I returned from 'Nam I had insults hurled at me by self-righteous activists and called names like "baby killer", even though I had never killed any babies and probably never even killed any legitimate adult enemy. Right now American troops and military resources are assisting in the Haitian quake disaster relief as well as in other areas around the world. I'd hardly characterize that as evil.

Dude, you are reading waaaaaaaay too far into what I was saying. You also responded before I got my edits in. Troops aren't evil obviously, and I didn't intend to say that. That doesn't mean that one should support their actions. All I was trying to do was point out that a reasonable mature adult (unlike Dhare, apparently) should be able to emotionally differentiate their political beliefs, however radical, from something as silly as a brand-name word association. We are talking about hubs, remember.

i think i'm gonna get it. its less than 200g, which is absurd, but i'm not going to be doing anything too radical. it's american-made (i'm assuming this), and i support paying a little extra for american labor. plus i already have a 24-hole rxl rim lying around.

as a side-note, i don't think this is an appropriate place to get political. we all know America is the greatest country and should turn communist and take over the world.

yeah.. you're right, i'm not sure either. under "contact" on their website they have both a US and Taiwan office. i may have assumed incorrectly. my personal belief that is if your company name contains "american," it should be an american product and anything different is unpatriotic. i'll skip the novatec's, but thanks for the mention. i might get the american classic's just because they're exactly what i need. else i'd get a phil wood.

Contributing to a society is a value put upon you by the very members of the society that stand to benefit. We are all brainwashed to believe that it is somehow of an objective and absolute value to contribute to those around us when in fact we only gain by helping those that help us.

I have a setup of AC 420 track wheels, they are crazy light, climbing hills on a fixed gear was never so easy :) If you do a bit a research on the company you will find they build quality wheelsets. The track nuts are good too, they are hex key style not 15mm like usual, i personally like them.

Oh, Anton LaVey.
I used to live a few doors away from him in San Francisco. No ****.
He lived in the Richmond district.
I was there too when they tore the house down in 02' or 03'. Cant remember.

He didnt fit into the neighborhood, to say the least. :)

OP-

FYI, it appears the AC track hubs are no longer being made, most retailers are sold out of the old stock.

These are the closest matches I can find to the AC hubs (and they have more build options too):
