Road Cycling - Have you ever painted your spokes?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was thinking that it might spice up my Trek 5200 road bike if I were to paint the spokes a nice color (rather than black). Has anyone painted their spokes? Have comments on the idea itself, best method, best products to use, if it will last or will it peel etc.

Thanks in advance...

:D Is this a gag? Well, I think it's funny. :p

I'm guessing if the spokes are steel, it'll be hard to get the paint to stick.

It would probably be easier to re-spoke it with nice shiny chrome spokes :)

Hey this is serious I think. There's a guy who rides this really hot Cdale with blue painted spokes to matcht he color scheme. It's looks bad a hell especially at 26-28mph that he rides. Paint your spokes if you wanna. I don't know why steel would make the paint hard to stick. Aren't cars made of steel? What about steel bikes? They're painted.

i would approach it like any other paint job. make sure the surface is clean, maybe use a little sandpaper, and then apply a few coats of your favorite color. should be pretty easy and straighforward. i've never done it though....

HAHA! Just when you begin to think the board is only good for discussion about which bike to buy and whether or not to get a triple on it, you get one of these. That's awesome.

Dude, it's your bike. If you wanna paint your spokes, go for it. It'd probably look pretty cool, but just remember: more weight. :p ;)

What's up, man...quite honestly, I would never think to paint my spokes! That's awesome...I could see some ghetto potential there, but like the guys before said, it look damn good. It all depends, really. About what to use...I bet, like a car, you will probably need an adhesion promoter and paint...you can get this stuff at a car Quest, or anywhere like that...Pep Boys, maybe? Check it out...good luck, and when you're done...post pics! I am really interested...what color is you bike? Again, my only concerns would be if it looks ghetto (too, "home-made" of a mod) and the other would be weight, but you may have it to spare...go for it!

You have been given a scheme, now get to work!

g'day,

paint my spokes?....hmm never thought of that!....maybe I might put one of those 'garfields' with the nodding heads on the handlebars too!.......now wouldn't it be really cool to have those irredecent blue strobe lights all around the tubes?......the possibilities are endless.........yeah, Xmas lights!!!!!.....but I'll need a long extention cord for my next century!........but seriously, I have used black nail polish on the spokes to cover up any stone chips!...(any other colour clashes with my jersey!)

cheers, (i think)

Wait....this is great...think about it....Start with a good primer....then a solid base coat of Pearl Imiron with a follow up of three layers of clear coat.....Alternate colors on the spokes and you're there!

"Transparent"? How do you know it's blue?

I say you paint your spokes so a pattern emerges when they spin. Perhaps an off-center spiral so your wheel looks really out of true and as you pass, people get dizzy and puke :D
