Recumbent - Finally bought a recumbent: and '03-'04 RANS Velocity Squared--any one else have one?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Picked up a V2 from a private party in Orange County via Craigslist. Red, fenders, rack, cyclometer, bar mirror, good condition, but will need new chainrings, chain and rear cluster soon as they look worn. Paint/frame (steel) is in very good shape and I have ridden it a few times. I am surprised at how light this bike is, as it looks as it should be heavier.

As I had never ridden a recumbent before, it was interesting riding one for the first time. I felt very akward, but I picked things up fast. It is scary when trying to start off on a slight uphill, but I feel with practice confidence will come. As for the tiller effect on up hills, well I didn't notice much but perhaps this is because I had been forewarned about this and I have always tried to ride without too much upper body motion.

The thing needs some re-adjustment as I have been goofing around with it to check the shifting but when the weather clears a little I will get out on it on the flats for a while, even if I have to drive there and then ride.

Also, did you know that a V2 will fit into the back of a Prius, provide the back seats are folded down and that you remove the front wheel and seat of the bike? It is a hassle but it works. And no, I have not had any problems with lack of brakes or unwanted acceleration with our Prius!

Does anyone else have a V2 or its current incarnation, the RANS Formula LE (which is aluminum)?

I have an '08 Rans V3, which is a similar bike with a 26" front wheel. I'm very pleased with it so far.

Yes, that is a common feeling as you get used to the bike. Still feeling it just a little bit on my V3 that was new in October - I have never felt it much on my SWB V-Rex.

Welcome to the club! Or cult?

Cool! I was very interested in all of the recumbent-learning comments.

President's Day, weather permitting, Mrs. grouch and I are planning a trip to Hays to test ride a Seavo. Having zero recumbent experience, this might be an adventure. We have a lot of tendem experience, so maybe it won't be too bad. I'm really stoked to make the trip.

I have a 2004 V2 Formula. It has taken a while to get accustomed to starting on slight inclines. I've had it about 4 months, and I still sometimes have to stop and restart. Once I started shifting into the correct gear when stopping, it was a lot easier. Enjoy your new ride.

Ahhh, correct downshifting--this is something I automatically did on my diamond frame, but now have to totally re-think about on the recumbent. I also need to re-think which leg will be the starting leg; it just seems that things are so different.

I encountered someone on a velocity squared last fall while I was riding my V-Rex and chatted with him a bit. He was very new to 'bents and was riding the local MUP to practice. The riding position was very similar to the V-Rex. The V2 is a nice looking bike, the rider was quite happy with it.
