Hi Folks,
I just retrieved my 1988 Miyata Trail Runner from my parent's house because I would like to get back into mountain biking. I haven't ridden the bike since the summer of '95 when I destroyed the rear derailer, freewheel, and a chainring. It was a good crash... I replaced the derailer with a Shimano unit and got a new chainring. I never got another 6-speed freewheel for it. Du-oh, now they are hard to find. The bike has the ever elusive Suntour XCD components on it except for the rear derailer. It even has the exceptionally crappy rear u-brake under the chainstay. My question is, since I replaced the derailer with a Shimano unit, can I just use a Shimano 6-speed freewheel? Or, does the Suntour have some special threads or something requiring a defunct Suntour freewheel? Thanks.

A Shimano freewheel will work. The threads for the hub are the same as Suntour and the cog spacing is almost the same.
So you have Suntour shifters and Shimano rear derailer? How did you get that to work? I've never been able to get indexed shifting to work well when mixing Shimano and Suntour.

Given what he said I don't think it's working. but I have suntour thumb rear shifter on an otherwise 7 speed shimano drivetrain and it works.

Update for you all. I ordered a Nashbar SIS style 6-speed freewheel and a SRAM 68 chain a couple of days ago. Hopefully I'll Have my parts for the weekend and get the old tank back on the trails. The only thing I forgot to order was new grips. My old ones are nice and dry-rotted. I guess it's time to break out the duct tape :)

Good question Sydney. The old freewheel is long gone. I used to work at a bike/ski shop when I trashed the bike so all of the disassembly was done back then. I did buy a splined tool for the new freewheel and a chain tool to knock extra links off of that 8-speed chain. I wish I knew where all of my tools went to that I used to have. Hmmmm.... Hopefully I won't run into any other problems this weekend.

Well, as of last night, it is back on the road! I took it for a spin for the first time in about 10 years and it still rides great. I put on a Nashbar 6-spd freewheel, a SRAM PC68 chain, repacked the rear hub, adjusted the derailer, and off I went. I still need some new grips and maybe some new toe-clips, but I think that's it. We'll see how it does on the trail this weekend. Thanks again guys.
