Advocacy & Safety - South Orange / Maplewood (NJ) Bicycle Coalition

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Our official web site is officially on the air, as of yesterday. I added a blog post to it.

How can I get the word out?
Thanks.

Nice site Tom. I used to bike all over the Oranges and Caldwells way back when.
You might want to let ALL your LBS's know about it. Then, let the local papers, including alternative papers and weeklys know. If there are existing bike clubs in the area, drop them a note too. Before too long the search engines should pick up your site.

Nchen, good idea. Thanks. There's one LBS three miles from me, in a neighboring town, Millburn. I'll notify them. Beyond that, I don't know where the nearest one is, but it can't hurt to notify them.

There used to be a LBS near the intersection of South Orange Avenue and Scotland Rd. Is it gone?
I used to live in W. Orange and bicycle to high school at Seton Hall (many years ago).
You could post it in the bicycles section of Craigs List.

Yes, the bike shop on South Orange Ave is long gone. A few months ago, I was thinking of opening one on the same avenue but my better judgment prevailed. ;) Maybe I'll do it one day, but this is not the right year to do it.
Thanks for that suggestion, too.
One thing we're doing is trying to get kids to ride more. As you know, parents and schools are overprotective. The middle school kids need written permission to ride to school. Maplewood Middle School has a nice bike rack, hidden in the inner courtyard. South Orange Middle School has a decrepit rack that no one uses, outside the building. The few who do ride to school park their bikes at the train station.

So you're not too far from Irvington. What about a Rails-to-Trails thing? There is a branch line Railroad, the Irvington Industrial Spur, which would be a fine bike trail. Unfortunately, it's not abandoned yet, but I'm looking at Google maps and I see there are two bridges over I-78, maybe one is abandoned?
