Classic & Vintage - How much is an old Peugeot UO8 worth in decent condition?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

A local used/new shop is selling a Purple UO8 that looks to be in decent condition for $129. This seems a bit high to me, but they have replaced all the cables and serviced the wheels, brakes, etc, it seems. The frame is scratched in several places but there is no rust that I can see. What would you pay for something like this?

five to twenty five dollars. Check for the cottered cranks and the steel rims; you'd probably want to replace both these items. If these have already been changed over, the bike is worth more. If the bike has the cottered cranks and the steel rims and you're not mechanincally inclined, I'd pass.

I'm not sure where you're located; but used bike prices seem to vary wildly according to where you are located. My prices are for my neck of the woods, and since I fix my own bikes up, I tend to discount shop work.

I like the old UO8s as beater rides-- in fact, I commuted today on one I have converted to fixed gear-- but they're not very hard to find; I probably run across five to ten a year here. Not valuable, but very workmanlike bikes.

I bought a Peugeot UO-8 for $25 from my local bike shop. It is the subject of a previous thread here. I replaced chain, cables, one tire, bar tape and brake pads. Total investment, about fifty dollars. Street value? Probably still $25 but I do have a bike boom classic in good condition.

Next project; Raleigh USA M-30 mountain bike. I assume from the early daze of the mtn. bike craze.

One just fetched just over $100 on eBay.

How do you tell a UO8 from a PA10? My peugeot is a Pre-1970 model. It was white with the cool checked decals and red lion on the front. Simplex, of course and pinned cranks. My wife bought it used in '70 and was previously stolen but had a clean title from the Orange County police sale.

It is huge, has the chrome forks with severe bend, weighs about 28 lbs, but is a dream to ride and race. Completed the Hotter N Hell 100 this year in 6hrs with no problem. I'm curious as to it's exact model and would love to get some decals. I have Matrix aero wheels and shimano 105 hubs and step in pedals. I goes like crazy down hill.

The PA10 will have an integral derailleur hanger, built onto the rear dropout. The UO8 will have the derailleur held on by a claw.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I went to the garage. I'm not knowledgable, but to me it looks like a "claw" is what holds the Simplex deraillier in place. It certainly does not appear to be anything "integral" to the frame. The "claw" slides behind the mechanism and is held in place by tension and a small bolt.

Were there many other differences in these bikes? I assume the PA10 was a little higher build quality?

Thanks again as I am brand new to this forum.

The claw/integral hanger was the only real difference in the frame. I believe the PA's came stock with tubular tires and a close-range freewheel. John E, who worked at a shop in the seventies, knows for sure and can probably fill us in a little better.
