Tandem Cycling - Just pulled the trigger on a tandem.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Just bought a KHS tandem. Basically, this bike: http://www.khsbicycles.com/11_sport.htm.
Paid $250.00. Bike is in Excellent shape. Original owner bought it to ride with his wife who is blind but her interest waned early and it's been garage kept for a few years.
Based on the test ride, I have a feeling that the level of communication with the wife is going to have to reach new levels.

Awesome. Looks pretty similar to my wife and I's Cignal tandem. We've been enjoying the heck out of ours (when the weather permits).
Enjoy it!
Excellent! Cool beans! :thumb:

Like the Grand Pooba of Tandem riding, Zonatandem says, communication is critical. You can try the lousy search function in the forum, but your best bet is to search using Google or Bing. You will get both BF hits and other informative articles, many written by authorities who haunt these hallowed halls. I did quite a bit of searching and reading when we first got our Tandem.

The Hobbes list recently had a thread called something like "Thing's Captains say" which illustrated some of the many means of communicating. I wouldn't recommend entering into the fray right now as there is a bit of turmoil, but the archives have a good deal of useful information whether applicable now or just to gain a perspective on the tandem life style.
The most important word in your vocabulary has now become "sorry" which was immediately preceded by failure to use the second most important word, "bump". Words for stopping, starting, cars, signaling, dogs, etc. are all there to be invented or copied. I'm sure MTB tandems have some phrases we roadies have never heard.
A functional tandem for $250! Great deal.
Still enjoying our "starter tandem" 2000 Tandemania Comp (a bit higher up the KHS food chain) after ten years.
As above, communication is key.
If the stoker says you're going too fast on a downhill, then it's time to back off/brake.
