But I was close to smacking it in, and if it never happens again, I'm OK with that.
It was just so quick. The corner of my eye, then.. ker-blop-bump. Then a sad squeak.
One quick wobble, no crash.

sad. they are menaces, but I felt bad when I ran over a squirrel when I first started riding. Did you look back?

I got one with both wheels once, going uphill, not too fast... two squeaks! But he ran off into the ditch so I think he was OK. One of those ground squirrels on Diablo... not nearly as big as a tree squirrel.

I got one with both wheels once, going uphill, not too fast... two squeaks! But he ran off into the ditch so I think he was OK. One of those ground squirrels on Diablo... not nearly as big as a tree squirrel.

Happened to me as well as the bottom of North Gate Road. I was going down full speed when I saw a blur and heard a big thump. Anything like I had heard before. I didn't fall, the bike even didn't bulged but I quickly stopped thinking I has broken a spoke. Nothing wrong to the wheel, no trace of the suicidal squirrel but scary nevertheless. From that day I am very careful when passing this area, it's just after the road starts leveling with rollers up to the last little bump before the ranger station. That area is infested with ground squirrels, the side of the road is completely poked with tunnels.
I remember a photo on the road forum a couple years ago when a guy shot a picture of a dead squirrel stuck in his wheel.

The least you can do is go back and put it out of its misery.

I was in Steamboat over the summer and a chipmunk ran out in front of me and stopped and stared. It's like he had a death wish... but then he kept running.
