Great day for a ride. Started out warm and got cooler the higher we went. Ran into snow on the sides of the road at elevation 4280. The peaks were hidden a good part of the ride by clouds, but good views were still available. Ride kicked my ass but Mr. Beanz and JustMe cruised it.

Very nice... great video. Tell me this (maybe again, I think I asked a similar question before): what kind of mileage were you doing on SART, etc., when you decided it was time to do these mountain roads? To me, that road seems completely out of reach at the moment.

BTW, Beanz, if you're taking requests, some favorites... how do you think they would do as soundtracks?

Run by Pink Floyd; Rocky Mountain Way, by Joe Walsh; Even Flow, by Pearl Jam; many Led Zeppelin songs, blah blah blah.

You can do it Man! I will personally escort you up! I will wear my camelback, carry your ham sangwich, your Kool Aid, It aint out of reach, Gina made it up to the 16 mile point but ti was 100 degrees. She's been up to the shack about 8 times. Hillbasher and I were talking and laughing the other day thinking aobut how many people think this ride is undoable. Heck, I can't even talk Eyemage into riding it and he's a hardcore climbing MTB fool! IT's well within your reach! It is not all that hard at all;). Thing that makes it tough is trying to go too fast.

I think the effort is about that of a 60 miler on the trail for the 42. But it depends on how fast you want to go. Again, I will ride WITH YOU! Ask Hillbasher what a really sweet encouraging kind soul I really am, regardless what these people say about me. :D

I'm going off my CD collection. Never been a big fan of Pink FLoyd, don't have Joe Walsh or Led Zepplin. I do have Pearl Jam though but I do usually try to fit the music to the ride. I'll try to get it in if I can. Maybe if we do a GMR ride!:D

I have a couple Eagles greatest CD's.

How about Disco? I was thinking of some Disco Inferno!:p

How fast is too fast?

You're saying that someone with the stamina to do 60 miles on SART could ride up GMR?

One of the guys I ride with occasionally has done GMR, and he's a stronger rider than I am, by a long shot. What I took away from the conversation was that GMR is a fairly challenging ride. I appreciate your offer, and I hope I can take you up on it before the warm weather sets in.

The grade is not bad on GMR. Just keep it slow and steady and you'll be fine. If you can ride 60 miles on SART, you can ride GMR.

rallison
02-09-10, 10:15 PM
And, of course, you can always continue on and do GRR. And the village to the lifts. The last 4 mile stretch of that is fun ;)

Yup, you can do GMR if you can do 60 on SART!:thumb:

By too fast mean outdoing yourself, not actual speed in MPH. Take your time, pace yourself and you will make it. Don't make it a race, that would be trying to go too fast.:D

Remember, GMR is only a little over 8 miles to the top.Do that as a first time. Or get the top and drop down to the East Fork and make the loop down 39. GMR/GRR/Baldy Village is over 20 one way. Longer and harder, but worth every ounce of effort it takes. Go as far as you can/like and turn around when you get tired. I am a mid 50's, out of shape, old fart, and if I can make it, anyone can. Nothing wrong not making it on ones first try either. It will always be there again for another try. The Mayor (Mr. Beanz) makes an excellant guide I might add. And a little side benefit, he puts you in the videos.

 I don't really think I am the person to ask. He rides my ass into the ground on every ride.
LOL In reality, he is a great person to ride with. Just don't let him tell you it stops hurting after a hundred yards. :thumb:

When are you going again? I have Sundays and Mondays off. I'll start with you but I know by the gate you'll be out of sight. I've only riden once, 26 miles, since Thanksgiving. I've been drinking too much beer and just being lazy. Hopefully I 'll get my lazy butt out of bed tomorrow and ride to work. Maybe, that will kick start me.

I'm not sure, anytime really. I' sposed to help my daughter move either this weekend or maybe Tuesdays since Monday is a holiday. I can prolly make it this Monday if you like but if I ride Sunday. I will suck :D....Aint no biggie, we don't race, right now it's about making it so I wouldn't be surprised if you drop me way yyybefore the gate.:o

Thanks for the compliment on the video. If you ever want me to sing, let me know, I like singing on camera too:D

Ok Zippy, I picked up a CD from Led Zepplin with Black Dog, ROcknRoll, Stairway to Heaven and I have Pearljam so we'll see what vid comes up next. They didn't have Pink FLoyd though.

Nice video JustMe, I like the music. Reminds me of the party scene in "Titanic" when Jack takes Rose downstairs to the party for the "less rich folk".

Ok Zippy, I picked up a CD from Led Zepplin with [...] Stairway to Heaven [...]

Very kind of you. Wouldn't you agree that "Stairway to Heaven" might somehow be appropriate for a GMR video? You could use the beginning for the climb and the end for the descent.

Since we're on the topic, two Zep songs that I find very energizing are "Wearing and Tearing (http://www.amazon.com/Led-Zeppelin/dp/samples/B000002IQ1/ref=dp_tracks_all_4#disc_4)" (see disc 4 of the set at the link for a sample) and "Trampled Underfoot" (disc 3), though I don't know if you could make them work for a video. Too, I've been thinking that "Travelling Riverside Blues" (disc 1) might fit well with a SART video. But they are your videos, so use whatever you see fit.

The CD I bought is only one CD, not a box set.:D.........I can try STH for a GMR climb. Would you want me to wait for you to do GMR or use for other riders?

My CD has Stairs, Leavy breaks, black dog, rocknroll music, going to California, Battle of evemore, foursticks. misty moutnin hop.

As you wish. I'm interested in attempting it some time, but I don't want to fix a particular date.

I rode SART this morning and FYI it seems the water level is down far enough now so the underpass at Orangewood is usable. Not totally dry, but usable. On the way home I saw a rider go across Orangewood instead of using the underpass, for what it is worth.

My wife, who, doesn't like riding, did I type that sorry. Anyway told me she wants to ride the Tour de Cure with me this year. I ride it each year. She is planning on riding the metric century. So I borrowed a bike from a friend and this Mondaty we planned to ride along the beach bike path.

If I took her to GMR for her first ride I think I would be sleeping in the garage with my bikes.

How about the 22nd?

Oh yeah, not to sure about that singing. The neighbors have cats

Is GMR passable?

It was on Monday, Tuesday it snowed, Rallison drove thru and took pics. Wed aternoon the gate was close when Hillbasher headed up. But the gate was again opened by the time he returned to the bottom.

We went up on Monday, to the village, no landslides or bad sections of the road, everything looked good besides a few rocks here and there.
