Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - 1973 Raleigh

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Loving my !973 Raleigh conversion! Some kid one day just gave me the frame. All it needed was wheels I couldn't believe it! Loving it! My beater fixie.
I have a 2008 Langster London that I baby and just take out to ride for speed. Increased the chain ring to a 46 and a 13 inch cog on the Langster. I am a masher.

Super course
Pics or it didn't happen (it = you being a real person :D). Random posts about how much I love my cool bike are cool, but useless unless you show us pics of the bike that is allegedly cool...
So let's see it. It's 2010, how long does it take to upload photos?

So you need some bike porn? OK I will post pics soon. It is just a beater with the original gold brown paint. I am leaving that way to hopefully avoid theft theft. My Langster is my baby that gets locked up like fort nox if I just leave it in the street...mostly I don't have to..most stores and such let me bring it inside. They usually start a conversation about the cool paint job and how pretty she is.
Porn pics just for you of the Raleigh soon Maddox.

Look forward to not having any knees in a couple of decades, unless you're running 20" wheels. - or for some reason (defying geography and all logic) you only ever ride downhill.

That is a ridiculous and ignorant statement Commodore. I am 46 years old and have legs with incredible strength. Always been a masher. I ride hills with ease and can ride into 30 mile and hour plus wind with this gearing. I have been a cyclist since childhood and used to race. That is DECADES of cycling with super strong legs AND knees lol. Everyone's body is different. Obviously you have whimpy legs and knees compared to a middle aged gal like me lol.

Nice to see another Raleigh 20 owner on the forum and you should know that 66 gear inches isn't that high a gearing... I run a 52:14 on mine and am often wishing for more gearing so when I build up a new rear wheel will run a 52:12 to get 81 gear inches on the high side.
Unless your name is Boonen you aren't running 93 gear inches (46:13 on a 700:25) into anything at any speed.

Sexy bikini shot. Just showing proof that that gearing on my Langster does nothing to hurt my knees or any other body part lol... In reference to the IGNORANT statement to this thread below. I am a 46 year old woman with a bod like a twenty year old and a masher who has road high gearing on fixies and track bikes for many decades lol

you put any njs parts on it yet? if you're running 93 GI you should or else things might start undergoing stress failure.
I run 54-14 on my street bike ( a recently built up look 596, so aerodynamic and efficient power transfer). It was tough at first but i just manned up (or in your case womanned up LOL) and got used to it. so easy now with my aerospoke up front (never noticed how much turbulence i got from regular spokes, it's like night and day difference). I'm not so good at skidding with the ratio yet still, but i just ordered some NJS toshi double straps and some sylvan tracks so I should be able to skid soon!
also, ignore the haters. people hate on me because i run risers on my bike but people say that a track bike shouldn't have risers (they don't get that i like the comfort of risers but want the aero and speed of a dedicated track frame). I find that risers are also much better for tricking (gonna get a landing gear fork soon, can't clear barspins :( )

We're still waiting for pictures of this awesome bike. I don't care how old you are, what you look like, or what gear ratio you use. But no pics, and you are a troll. And not a very good one.

You can't just post the path to the file on your computer. We'd have to be literally sitting at your computer to make use of this info. So long as the file remains on the hard drive that is part of your personal computer, people on the internet cannot access it. You would have to upload your pictures to a server, which hosts images that are generally accessible.
I'm assuming you know this and are just playing games in internet forums. My money says you're a 14 year old boy with a Diamondback and too much spare time.

We should all race before you blow up your knees... will make sure we pick a route with light traffic, no hills, and wait for a calm day just so you have a hope in hell of winning.

Hey Lupin, I guess they think our knees are going to go lol. What dumb ass opinions. It gives us super thighs and very strong legs including the knees. Builds muscle and makes you stronger. I also work out with weights...same concept. What a bunch of idiots! Ride your little gearing and spin like mad. Leave us mashers be! I was not picking on you for having weak legs (whimps)! Don't pick on me for having strong legs and loving to mash. The Raleigh bike is an ugly beater I just ride around without worrying about getting stolen. WTF do you want to look at pics of that for? Read the original post! I said it was a beater! My baby is the Langster and had to up the gearing on that too so I could mash. Just let it be..you all spin with your week whimpy legs and I will mash with my strong powerful legs lol.

sorry brah i was trolling. I got a slap on the wrist though so i gotta tell everyone jay kay
i ride 49-17, i'm down with the cadence. ride what gear you please. probably not the best idea to run 90 GI brakeless but it's also a good idea to wear a helmet and i often forget to do that

There is a reason why road cyclists prefer to keep a cadence of 90 or higher, to preserve their knees. And what does being a spinner have to do with having weak legs?
+1 with you being a troll, but I gave in anyway

I have never hit a 90 cadence in 28,000 miles.
Spinners have skinny legs, not weak ones.

Just to give people an idea, this guy is averaging 97rpm for the first minute here (yes I just counted):

In the old days the top time trialists ran gearings of 76 gear inches on fixed gear bikes to knock down times of less than an hour for 25 miles and would have to spin at just about 110 rpm for a full hour. Having done this on a period correct bike I can say this is still quite a challenge.
These guys knew they'd get wasted if they pushed their gearing over 80 as this was not efficient for riding this distance on the road.
The best modern day track racers will run gearings that are around 90 GI.
So when folks say they run gearings that are close to or exceed 100 and consider themselves fast my BS meter starts going crazy.
Used to run 82 gear inches and rode this for 1000's upon 1000's of kilometres and my friend, who is half my age ran a slightly steeper gearing than this... he is a freak on a bike.
Despite that, he took my advice to drop his gearing to the mid 70's and became nearly impossible to catch and I also dropped my gearing just a little... I was a hard guy to catch... especially on climbs.
