Charity Events - Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Great Strides!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

First off, I am a newer member of this biking community and love this site. It contains endless information which may or may not be a good thing. (There are so many nice bikes, I just want to buy one of each. lol.)

I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis about 3 years ago when I was 21. Since then, I have been trying to exorcise as often as possible to get my lungs in shape as they were the key to my survival. I found that most gym activities were dull and boring. Since I found this site about 1 year ago, I started looking into cycling. More importantly, cycle commuting. Now I am a full time cycle commuter and live virtually car free. I dont own a car but borrow one time to time for my doctors visits etc.

I have also been looking to start a ride for Cystic Fibrosis. This idea has not been forgotten but just put aside for the time being. (Takes alot of people and sponsors to create a ride). I am however involved in a program called Great Strides to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. I am also in the last phase of a clinical trial which will be a huge leap into dealing with and curing CF. (Vertex VX-770)

I started a team with Great Strides and am going to be walking for a cure in Escondido Ca on 5-01-2010. I am looking for donations. You make the donations in the link below which is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundations secure website. Any thing helps. If you are interested in making a donation or just want to see what Great Strides and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is all about please click below. Thank you.

Adam,

I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but am very glad that you are doing so well. It sounds like you are well on your way towards keeping yourself as healthy as possible. I was drawn to cycling through CF as well. My daughter was diagnosed at 3 months. She is 14 now and also on the Vertex study. While on that medication, she is as healthy as she has ever been. Very encouraging. Our local CF Foundation chapter has decided to add a cycling event called Cycle for Life in addition to te Great Strides walk. This ride is just in the planning stages but we intend to have a family friendly 20 mile ride and a more challenging 65 mile (for 65 Roses) course. I'll bet with a little encouragement, your chapter could get in on this fundraiser. There is also a team forming that is looking for cyclists with CF. Check out http://teamcf.org/
I have not been on a bike in maybe 30 years, but I committed to doing this ride. I have enjoyed the few times I have been out and look forward to a good biking season. Best wishes on your Great Strides walk. Ours is in May and our Ride is in October. Take care of yourself and good luck.
