Captain Phil Harris of the Cornelia Marie suffered a massive stroke while his boat was off loading crab in St. Paul Island, Alaska on January 29th. He died yesterday. At least he died doing something that he appeared to love.

It's very sad. I feel for his boys.

Too bad he didn't pull through.

Bummer, but it was kind of obvious it was just a matter of time unfortunately.

I would rather watch Discovery Channel and The Learning Channel than most other things on TV. The wife and I record Deadliest Catch on the DVR and watch it together. It is a good show about what appear to be some real cowboys on this earth. Living a very rough life, but making a good living for it. Work long hard hours for weeks at a time then head to town to drink and carouse.

I never watched the show enough to know everyone's name, so I looked up a picture. I remember him now:

It's probably fair to point out that having a stroke isn't exactly the sort of incident that I would call living up to the name. Deadliest Catch is a reference to the more direct perils of work at sea. Regardless, this is sad news. The wide array of characters are a big part of what made the show fun, and he certainly had a distinctive personality.

If you knew his background lucky, you might have a differing view point. In the recent past, he took a fall on the boat and began having chest pains and difficulty breathing. Then he began to cough up blood. Stayed on the boat as long as he could. Eventually was taken to shore and told that he had a blood clot move through his heart and into his lungs. He was coughing up blood due to this. Stayed off the boat and got healthy, and returned to do what he loved, knowing full well the risks involved. I am willing to bet that the stroke was brought about by another blood clot.

No, he did not die due to getting pulled off the boat by a crab pot, or some other maritime accident. But he did die while fishing for crab, something he had done for all his life and was passing on to his sons.

I see. Quite the back story.

My Mom had a stroke about a week ago. She's fine - no side effects but it was quite a scare. Our family isn't ready to lose our matriarch
