Mountain Biking - Mountain bike stars of yesteryear...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Maybe a little overdue, but here's a thread to my mountainbike heros...in a sense of their achievements in the sport of mountainbike racing.

I think it was on the cover of Mountain Bike magazine that I saw a picture of John Tomac riding a decent that got me into mountainbiking in the first place...so here below, are my stars...

Tim Gould

British mountainbike champion for many years, an inspiration uphill..in 1995 he came back from a brain operation to retake the British mountain bike title.

Thomas Frishneckt

The ever ready Swiss mountainbike and cyclo-cross star who's never very far behind the World Cup leaders...been with Ritchey for what seems a lifetime

Ned Overend

What can I say...he's still going, and still at the top of the game too! :D

John Tomac

The style guru who's done everything in the sport, from cross country to downhill, and won pretty much everything else...what a guy!

Well, that's mine...what's yours?

Rich

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Overend during last year's U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Real nice guy. I'd say he's my favorite "mountain bike star of yesteryear...)

Hehe, you're right!

And I also left out heroines like Sara Ballentine, Julia Furtado and our own gutsy Caroline Alexander.

Hehe...can't wait to see the new photo's of your bike man!

I'm having Pace forks put on the Kona in the next few days to have a bit of a break from suspension.

He's a picture of 'Katie' before she undergoes surgery!

Well... neither Frishknecht nor Giove are really stars of yesteryear since, as far as I know, they're still in the game -- though Frischi doesn't ride for Ritchey anymore, since there isn't a Ritchey team for 2002.

My big mountainbiking hero of yesteryear was Steve Tilford. He epitomized the true grit of the sport. I remember him riding as a privateer -- and doing very well -- on the circuit in the early 1990s, on a self-maintained Bridgestone.

He was a great roadie, a truly great mountain biker, a cyclocrosser and, guess what? He's still racing and winning in his 40s, and doing Iron Man triathlons. This guy is one hard dude.

Other greats of my youth... Tomac, of course, Juli Furtado, Lesley Tomlinson [I always harboured more than a deep admiration for her ;)], Rishi Grewal, Tinker...

Oh yeah, and Herbold and Rey. Who couldn't admire those guys...

[Not bad for a roadie, eh?]

Rich, What are your existing forks - are they 1" or 1 1/8" headset ?
