Foo - Cheap laptop

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Need a cheap laptop for web browsing and using with my trainer. Asking Foo if there's anything they would recommend or recommend avoiding. Not looking for a powerful machine here and really don't need tons of memory. Just a solid, basic machine.

The typical laptop lives a pretty rough life. Common failures are related to the display (flexed with each open/close), hard drive (impacts), motherboard (from the case flexing), and heat-caused failures of many components. Typically this is worse on cheaper laptops because they skimp on the chassis (less rigid), display frame (ditto), impact dampening, and cooling.
So, if your laptop is going to live the typical laptop life of being moved around constantly, don't go for the bottom end. On the other hand, if it mostly will sit open in one place, buy the cheapest system you can find. But then if it's going to mostly sit, I'd consider a small desktop instead - less costly and much more rugged.

I bought my wife a ~$350 netbook from Asus. Works great. 10 or 11 inch screen. It really does have a 6 hour battery life (6 cell model) and can live off of the cord. All previous laptops I have owned could not boot before the battery died. Nice to be able to take it anywhere. No cd rom but we have not missed it.

Any reliable netbook is good for browsing. Of course you could wait for the iPad to be released first and try that out at an Apple store ;)
I'm very close to pulling the trigger on this guy

We have bought discounted netbooks recently from frys.com and dell-outlet.com the latter in particular is pretty cool and cheap, like 30% off from new.
