You'd think it would be more exciting to buy stuff in stores, or at least to browse, but really, that's seldom true.
It's the anticipation. You put it in the cart. You select your shipping method. You pay for it.

It's ridiculous. I should not be excited to get a replacement lens cap in the mail. I mean, what the heck? It's a $6 piece of plastic! Yet I see that little bubblewrap-lined envelop in the mailbox and I get so I can't sit still. All else is for a moment secondary to getting a glimpse of that black disk with the spring-loaded tabs that I spent 3-5 business days waiting for.
Then I've seen it and the magic fades. Consumerism has lofted my soul with anticipation, and then left me exactly as I was before, although with slightly better protected lenses.
