Southern California - Pedouins - Family on a Quint Bike up to Alaska

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Anybody heard of them?
I'm pretty sure I heard of this from bikeforums. I've been kinda following this family on their journey. It's a family with three small girls biking to Alaska on a quint bike with a trailer; camping and staying in generous people's houses along the way.
Pedouins (http://www.pedouins.org/index.html)
and they are in SoCal now. Actually, South Carlsbad at the moment.
You can see where they are here

I imagine they should be travelling thru OC (where I am) over this weekend or the earliest part of next week. Anybody out on PCH or so (don't know their exact route) might see them.
I'm thinking of trying to see them; just to see that long train of a bike.

I emailed them and might try to run into them if I can make it happen.

What do you all think?

They stopped at Pacific Coast Cycles this afternoon. Very nice people, very well mannered children.

I hope they run into a bike shop with good tandem expertise. Reading their logs; they've had lots of problems with chains and they go thru tires quite rapidly.
Maybe someone has tips to help them out.

I think they're going to always have problems with the tires because of the load.

They stopped at the shop to pay for, I think, some chainrings they had mailed to them. They only stayed to pay the bill and talk to the small crowd that gathered. They didn't ask the owner for advice or to look at anything on the bike. It's a hell of a rig.

Maybe I'll see them tomorrow. I will be riding from Anaheim to Oceanside and back with the OCW Saturday Century group.

I ended up riding with them for about 15 miles from Laguna to HB. They sure do get a lot of attention!
Tommorow they are headed from HB to Lomita, Wednesday on to Malibu.
So if you are on PCH the next few days, you just might see them.

Long bike, no kidding. They go really slow up hill and when Bill falters a bit (like most of us do) and turns the bars; it's like a whole barn door swinging shut. They do go fast downhill though.
It takes them a lot of coordination to start, stop, turn, coast and shift.

Figured I'd post a little update on their progress.

They've made it to San Francisco and had lots of adventures on the way - including their trailer burning to the ground while camping; probably due to electronics overheating.
