Road Cycling - To those riders in Raleigh, NC

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I just moved to raleigh from Maryland for school (NC state) and mostly, I was wondering where the good roads for riding were. I mean, like the quiet two or no lane roads that go on for a while, with decent hills. mostly, i'm looking for rides that are about 30-60 miles from the NC state campus.
I know its a tall order, but I just cant seem to find anything. I rode in this suburb, near ridge road where there was a loop layed out...but it was a few miles at most. I need rides a bit longer. any help is appreciated.

What's up, dude...I graduated from there in '02, so welcome to wolfpack country...that's great you didn't decide to become a turtle! Anyway...there are two shops that are awesome in the area...Frank's Cyclery out at Brier Creek shopping Center...out past Crabtree mall going towards Durham, and The Spin Cycle in Cary. At the Spin Cycle they do different group rides mostly on Tuesdays, I believe. I haven't bought a road bike, but that's part of the reason I signed up for this forum..to gain knowledge. There is also a Cycling team on campus...I believe they compete with other schools, and the Spin Cycle sponsors them...go to www.thespincycle.com and there is a link to the team's website. Let me know if that helps...I'll check this post again

Howdy from another alumnus. Raleigh is my home town, but I've been away for a while and have lost track of the development. I do know that you are going to have to go further out than Ridge Road....
Wow, that wasn't helpful at all...

Another good bike shop in the area is: http://cyclingspokenhere.com/site/intro.cfm
For what it's worth, I've found these club rides posted on the NC Bike Club site that may be helpful to you, in addition to the group rides sponsored by the Spin Cycle, etc.: http://ncbikeclub.org/queue_sheets/ncbcqueue.htm.

I have found the people at Spin Cycle to be the absolute best. I think they have rides every day, also. If you want some good biking, Cary has some pretty good loops. That's where I do most of my riding.
Maps! (http://www.ncdot.org/planning/statewide/gis/DataDist/GISBikeMaps.html)
That should help a bit, also. =)

wow, thanks a lot people. I will definitly check out that NC bike club cue sheet reference.
I hope that when I join up with the cycling team, they will show me some good rides too. although, the student body seems more focused on mtb then road. it could just be my impression though. Ideally, i'd like to do both, but I just dont have room in my room for two bikes...theres barely any room for one!

Hello from another Wolfpack alumni
Soon you'll be like me and favor bikes that are red
Enjoy the rides, look into riding out towards Sharon Harris there seem to be a lot of local races and rides that go through that area and its somewhat close to NCSU
