I am getting back to Road Biking after 10 years but I get posterior Heel pain from the rubbling of shows due to Haglund's Deformity. When i try bike shows it really irritates it even though i have lifts that get me out of the back of the shoe...any advice?? thanks

Sorry to hear that, Jirwin. I also have HD. Last year around this time I was in agony and finally broke down and spent the $100 on a pair of Dansko clogs (Zappos has the best price). That and a lot of aspirin over a week's time made all the difference. Heel lifts may or may not work- even though they can get your heel closer to the top of the heel counter, they can't get it completely out of the way. Plus, they put some strain on the Achilles tendon (and the spur that sits between it and the heel bone (calcaneus). I think most people agree that backless shoes are the best remedy, at least to get you through the acute inflammation, but also as a preventive too.

In any event, it's best to avoid shoes with a high heel counter (which means most running or cross training shoes, but also road shoes, which don't have such a high heel counter, but the counter is very stiff. For riding, you might try bike sandals. The heel strap can usually be adjusted to ride above the spur area.

I'd try the clogs. Good luck!
