Electronics, Lighting, & Gadgets - Garmin 305 Edge...wierd mapping

I have used the 305 since last September and I'm having an issue with something that doesn't make since. Back in October I rode a century and it recorded all the info perfectly except the mapping. It only recorded the last 52 miles. Today I rode the Tour de Palm Springs and it did the same thing, dropped the first part of the mapping and recorded only the last 68 miles. Is there some sort of default amount of mapping info it can hold or what? Anyone else having the same problem?

Ok...will this give less accurate information in other areas? What is the difference in the two settings?

It will use less memory.
If the gps is set on every second you only get about 3.5 hours of recording.
With it on Smart Recording you will get more time depending on the coarse you are going.
Also what is happening is the gps is filling up with memory and erasing the first part of the ride .

Smart Recording simply does not record all the intermediate points if you're moving in a straight line and not changing speed significantly. It records data when it needs to, when either speed or direction (or cadence or heart rate maybe?) change enough to matter.
