2010 Swedish Crescent releases the Valkenburg, a replica of the 1948 world championship bike. A piece of art! Opinions?

tig welded, ergo drops, threadless, cheap cranks, cable guides, brake drillings

lets make a silver bike with low profile rims and call it an old school replica. f their lives

It is nothing close to the bikes that were ridden in 1948... it is a new bike that is capitalizing on a little bit of racing history.

Fails as a reproduction on every level but it might be a pretty nice ride with those more relaxed frame angles and not every kid on the block will have one.

You will see that in the 40's and 50's many fixed gear road bikes ran dual brakes for single speed descents but they would have been mounted as road brakes and not cross levers.

Briek Shotte won the 1948 Championship and was a very highly rated racer in his day having won the World Championship twice (in the professional classification) in '48 and '50, finished second behind Bartali in the 1948 TDF, in addition to many other notable wins.

He is one of Belgium's national heroes.

I'm with Sixty Fiver, if it had road levers, not those interrupter levers, maybe normal road drops, wing nuts, and those handlebar mounted aluminium water bottles, I might consider buying it. It's not a replica, more of a re-imagining.

It's a halfhearted, poorly thought out ploy to get hipsters to get out their wallets.

BTW, OP, that "replica" only replicates every other cheapo FG/SS on the market.

I ride and work on bikes from that era... just finished putting my '54 Raleigh together tonight although it's a 3 speed.

I have enough fixed gear bikes already.

This thread is a whole truck load of retro grouch. LOL!

"Why the bike's hub is 2cm larger than the original dutch bike's. Who would be caught dead on this travesty to cycling history in deed. Pip pip."

Whole post chock full o' fail.

Look up the word "reproduction" as it applies to material objects.

As a commemorative it is fine.

Guess you weren't here for the "replica vs. tribute" thread.

tribute might be a better description. But you cant change history or the glory of the Crescent name - I´m sure the intentions alright cos the hipsters of today dont know about 1948:innocent:

FAIL. the whole cockpit of that bike looks cheap. how are you gonna make a "tribute" bike and not have a quill stem and proper track bars on the thing?

exactly, just like everyone else in this thread. if you're the only one who "gets it" then maybe it needs a re-thinking? 'cause it's not impressing anyone in its current state.

no need to re-think anything, I´m not posting to "impress" anyone (in this thread). And track bars is neither replica nor tribute on a -48 road bike.

Sorry. Didn't mean to hit to close to home there. :)

And how is this bike hugely different from (or better than) the average stock Kilo TT?

The 'intention' may be alright but the delivery misses the mark, in my opinion.

if crescent wants to catch hipsters they should reintroduce the orange/racing flags/world champ stripe paint scheme of thethe 1970s

That would catch me.. hipsters would strip the frame and paint it black.

That's a good argument for basically getting a taiwanese factory to produce the same bike they have been making for years, in colours a little similar to a classic track bike.

Nothing on this bike makes it a replica, nothing even makes it a tribute bike because a tribute bike would have good parts on it, unless it was a tribute to some POS bike made 50 years ago! but why would you even bother tributing that!

だから FAIL!
