A culmination of 4 months of waiting, spending large sums of money, seeking and buying parts from many different places, finding some parts wouldn't work and replacing them with other parts, many hours of assembly including putting things together backwards and learning to do new things.
It all came together last night and today we took the first the ride. I was expecting a lot from this bike and after a relatively short 30 mile ride I can say it delivered. The ride is smooth, vibration is almost not detectable. It feels like floating over the road while still being connected to it. It took me a while to get used to the quick steering and standing was squirrelly at first. But by the end of the ride standing felt more like a single bike and we were better in sync than before. Descending is great because there is no chatter or bouncing and I feel more confident at higher speeds.
I am really happy with the Campy ergo shifters mated to a Shimano drive train.
The 50/39/28 and 28-11 gearing is just right.
Some comments from my stoker during the ride:

It feels fast, it's so smooth, how come there is no shock post? Ok we can keep it.

If it was not for this forum, I probably would have never got the idea and/or gone ahead with this endeavor. I got a lot of great information on components and help with assembly issues, so thanks!

Final weight is 28.5 lbs.
Can't wait to get this bike on the road again.

Very nice, JNB!

Looks very elegant with the two tone fade.

Are you happy with the calipers' stopping power, and did you think of having a disc brake?

It's too soon to tell. Coming from squealing V brakes, it's nice to leave the noise behind but I did find myself using more pressure on the brake levers.
Maybe I need to experiment with different brake pads, not sure if the ones that came with the Mavic brakes are optimal.
I do have a disk compatible rear hub, so I could add one at any time but I like the simplicity and weight savings of calipers.
When is your bike due? Interested in seeing how your paint job came out.

We too have a disk hub, and I am going to have an Avid BB7 installed as we'll be doing hills right off, and I don't want to melt my rims.

We'll be picking it up March 12th at Calfee' (http://www.calfeedesign.com/contactinfor.htm)s in La Selva Beach, on our way down to the Solvang Century (http://www.bikescor.com/solvang/welcome.htm) the next day.

Great project putting a tandem TWOgether!
Looks great, and sounds like the ride is everything you expected!
With a c/f frame most stokers do not need a suspension seatpost.
Stoker Kay has never had a suspension seatpost on any of the 5 tandems we've owned over the last 35 years.
Have ridden 30+ brands/models of tandems including a few a suspension setups. Best we found (for her) was the now near-extinct Softride beam, followed by the original Thudbuuster.
However, on our personal twicers she's has never needed/wanted one.
Enjoy the ride TWOgether!
Pedal on!
