Bicycle Mechanics - When do you replace your chain?

I tried the search feature and couldn't find the answer. I apologize if this has been addressed before.

How often should you replace the chain on a road bike?

I keep my chain clean and well lubricated and it isn't skipping. However I have 3,000 miles on the chain and I'm wondering if it should be replaced before it starts to damage the cassette. My Bicycle Repair Book suggests a new chain at 1,000 miles to prevent cassette damage.

I hate to replace it if it's still good. It shifts nicely, I don't hear chain noise, it's not stretched the 1/8 inch over 12 links (suggested wear limit), but is it time for it to go?

If it's not stretched .125" yet, you're safe. I'm kinda anal about chains and repalce mine when it get to .10", maybe a little less, Even so, I can get 2500-3000 miles per PC-59 SRAM chain.

JBBThat 1/8" in a foot is bogus and if let go that long will trash your casette. Go with 1/16". Mileage is meaningless.

I have 6 bikes to keep track of, so I picked up one of these:
