I've been only using the grip shifters and the ones where you have to move a lever with your thumb...what are triger shifters and how do they work?

Trigger shifters are the ones you move with your thumb and/or index finger. Works the same as a grip shifter. You push the lever and the wire is either pulled or released a bit and the derailleur moves.

Some folks like triggers better than twists. I do.
What I like best is how on the rear trigger, you can dump a few gears at a time by just pressing further on the thumb lever. Ony my LX shifters, I can change my chainring up and drop on my rear simultaneously and have the exact "step up" instantly. It's almost like having more gears in back...it's great. I'm not sure if my method of shifting on the chainring swap is good for my drivetrain or not, but it's rather impressive that it does a shift like that so gracefully. It's going up a chainring and dropping 4 sprockets at the same time. BTW, I have a rapid-rise rear derailer.
To shift, just pull the trigger with your index finger. To go back down a gear, press the thumb one down a bit.
