Bicycle Mechanics - What is this small part and where can I get some?

I'm referring to the dark nut that sits on the inside of the dropout. It's serrated to keep the axle from spinning as the track nut is tightened. Is it called a cone nut?

I need some (10x1 and 9x1). I called Zipp and they want $15 each for these bad boys :(

not familiar with that hub so I don't know if thats a fair price or if its specificaly for that hub, someone who is familiar with it could help more.

If you have a relationship with the local dealer, they might scavenge a pair off a dead wheel when the opportunity arises. Otherwise, shop all the sites that sell small parts and look for "cone lock nuts", under hub parts.

They are part of the hub. I'm at a loss as to why you'd need "some" unless you're trying to rebuild a few older hubs.

And yeah, if that's the case then haunt your local bike shops. Most of them will have a junk box or two that you can scrounge thru. Bring the axles so you can test fit the locking nuts to them.

No. It's just a locknut. With what looks like deeper serrations so that a track hub will not slip on bad dropouts. The zipp website almost shows it to be some sort of proprietary cone/locknut combo - not quite sure http://www.zipp.com/support/maintenance/track-axle-kits.php

That's not the part I need. The part I need isn't as long. The part I need (in the original post) comes separate and is just bigger than the thickness of a nickel.

At the track I change gears at least 3 times a training or race day (warmup gear, race gear, race gear #2)The teeth on the part gets gnawed down over time so I intend to buy a replacement set for the rear, a backup set for the rear, and a backup set for the front assuming they only cost $1 or $2. Right now it's a pain in the butt to set the wheel and the chain tension as you tighten one side, it spins the other. Fresh (quality) track bolts and whatever these things are called eliminate that.

You don't need a shimano specific locknut. You do need to know the the axle diameter and pitch, shimano will be 10x1 and the thickness of the locknut - is the zipp the same axle wise? Dura ace track axle locknuts will retail for around $10. Any shop can order shimano small parts

I'd say you could use any old knurled locknut with the same thread dimensions, or just throw on some knurled washers.

I reckon allen-head skewers would be worth a try; heaps easier if the rear one grips hard enough... and a definite shoo-in for the front. If it's legal...

I know that I don't necesisarily need a Shimano product. I just provided the diagram to clear up the confusion. But, YES, the Shimano lock nut *would* work. I use Shimano track bolts because they are the same pitch and MUCH MUCH better than Zipp bolts.
