Foo - Curling

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Is this an Olympic worthy sport?

I'm a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to the Olympics. I can't stand it when I see events being added that don't require strength, speed or agility. Curling is a game ... not a sport. Yes I realize the sweepers might be a bit winded by the time they get to the end of the rink, however I wouldn't call it Olympic exertion.

no. if they argue it is competitive, there are all sorts of competitive games. scrabble, chess, computer games, darts, lawn bowls, pool, tiddly winks to name a few.

I regularly take medicine that is a banned substance in Olympic curling competition. I don't relish being a doper.

Does Olympic shooting belong? That event was in the first modern games.
How about biathlon? Does the management of heart-rate while coasting into the range make it less or more of a valid sport than pure XC?
Is figure skating a sport? Most of the judging is done before they even take to the ice.
Much more so than figure skating, and that is considered a headline "sport". If all figure skating was dropped from the Olympics, it would be better for every one.

Hey! I am asking the question here. Start you own thread.
BTW, I am not implying either, just asking a question.

Is it still a sport if you can quaff a beer while participating?
Is beer drinking a sport?
I'm not implying either... and I don't start my own threads for fear of people ridiculing me.
Is ridiculing a sport?
If not, why are people who withstand it well considered good sports?

No. It is called recovery.
Finally, an Olympic worthy question.

you know, shirling is a good sport, too (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gu3mbl8SAk).
I think they should make curling and pairs ice dancing a combined event. Two countries compete at once with each country's curling team aiming for the opposing country's ice dancers.

Curling, bmx racing and some snowboard events should be removed from the games. As artistic as ice skating is, the coverage is too biased for me. I have decided to skip watching them.

I would watch this. Also, I always wondered why forechecking (http://proicehockey.about.com/od/hockeyglossarydg/g/Forechecking.htm) was discouraged in golf.

Have any of you ever tried curling? It is a difficult sport. There is a lot of skill, strategy and athleticism that is necessary. I would say that it belongs just as much as volleyball, basketball and hockey belong.
Objective judging is subjective. I have a problem with events that rely on it. When the Aussies complained about the results of the moguls event, one of the Canadian TV stations did an overlay of both competitors showing clearly where the Canadian won the event. If nothing else, it was a good STFU moment.
Curling to me just lacks athletic prowess. The players can be middle aged, out of shape and in my opinion, sex makes no difference. It is a finesse game. Shuffleboard.

If it was up to me, I'd remove any event where a judge gets to decide who won.
"Swifter, Higher, Stronger". Not "The best in someone's opinion".

Being a spectator at the TDF is more athletic.
Curling is also almost unbelievably boring until near the end.
That said most of the time they seem to edit it and only start from where the strategy starts to seriously come into play. If it stays and serves as a reminder that coverage of some contests is best with decent editing then I can live with it being included in the games.

oh and to <3 2 ride. Yes I have actually curled a few times. Very difficult I agree. I was fortunate to be in a gym class that had 2 months of alternative sports. Curling was 1 week, and I have curled since (I am that drunk guy trying to slide the rocks as hard as possible to the end like bowling, sorry after 3 hours I am DEADLY bored).
My opinion, still sucks. Right up there with sober bocci ball, law darts and lawn bowling. It is a skilled activity.

I really like law darts, as long as the lawyers are the targets and they have signed a legal non prosecution waiver.

In all my mocking, my wifes family are avid curlers. In fact one cousin competed to get on the olympic team.

This just in: America stinks at curling (at least on the first day).
And no, you don't have to be athletic at all to curl. Your run-of-the-mill janitor can probably do it.

i'm watching it live. GB is kicking french butt and the crowd is chanting USA! USA! USA! America must be in action too. how exciting.
what is worrying is i can hear lots of cow bells. are these fans the same crowd as cycling fans? The comentator also made a point of telling us that one of the team is a keen cyclist. Please tell me the rest of the world doesn't look at cyclists like we look at curlers.

Are you saying Rugby isn't a sport? Of course in League play one rarely has a beer during a match. (And surely not that American drek).
With my knees gone I may be drinking a bit more during matches, I'll only be good as a blood sub for a few minutes!

I love how curling isn't a sport but riding in a bob sled is. If you drove to the Olympics they wouldn't give you a medal.

They would if you drove there in a Nascar. BTW, former Nascar driver Geoff Bodine designs and builds sleds for the US Team.
